'does anyone remember when Wilkins was Chelsea..' Yes,I remember Butch Wilkins at Chelsea when he was one of the most sought after midfielders in europe - watched him many times as a player for Chelsea & United & England when he had to be sold to pay for the financial misdealings of Ken Bates in the bad old days of relegation at The Bridge etc.

The financial misdealings were before Batesy. It was because of the misdealings that Batesy bought the club. Wilkins left in 79, I think Bates came in in 81.

Give the guy some credit ! he's been there, one it,and got the England T shirt dozens of times so knows his stuff,he's just inept on the telly an unable to put his views across in any coherant or entertaining manner - it doesn't make him a 'cretin' ! he's forgotten more about about football than the likes of us will ever know.

Rob is just outraged that anyone who doesn't have 250 appearances for Liverpool gets on TV.

top player, felt the crab image he had was harsh, the season before he left United for Milan he was unbelievable, passing range akin to a Hoddle or Beckham at the peak of their powers. His Cup Final goal v Brighton was superb, but probably doesn't get shown much as the game went to a replay and is best remembered for 'and smith must score'

Anyone remeber when Spurs played Madrid at the Bernabeu last season in the CL? I lost count on the number of times Wilkin said "stay on your feet" during that match. My word.

Is there a bigger hypocrit in football than Roberto Mancini? Charging round the DW flashing his imaginary red card like the crazy Italian fool from the Ladbrokes adverts.

He was wrong to do it, but, my word, that was surely a red, wasn't it?

My word refs in Man City games have been truly awful this season.

My initial reaction was yes, but the commentator on Sky spelled it out very clearly I thought.

Deliberate handball is a yellow card offense. It is only a red if it prevents a goalscoring opportunity. Kind of like in rugby league where you can't have a penalty try if someone was smashed high on the half way line, even when clear through, it's the same in football. His interpretation was that you can't say it's a goalscoring opportunity when it's in his own half. Ref seemed very clear it was a yellow and the fourth official was explaining it to David Platt who seemed to be nodding, as if acknowledging it.

IMO, if he intentionally fouled him, then that would have been classed as a 'professional foul' and he would have walked. IMO, just because it's at the halfway line, doesn't mean the goalscoring opportunity doesn't or won't happen. If you're the last man and the ball is being played towards your goal, then if you bring down the player, you're denying him the chance to run down field alone, which to me, is a goalscoring opportunity.

For me it was a clear red, he denied a goalscoring opportunity and it was cynical. Like with dangerous fouls, I'd send him off for his intent.
