Tigers proud of youth products : Fri Feb 15, 2013 11:44 am

Looking at these figures - how do we compare with other SL teams ? Leeds and Wigan must be the bench mark but we cannot be far off.

Its a great record in home grown and one that clubs should be looking to emulate.

Well done.

It is great & we have a few more pushing their way through for contention.

When it's all said and done The Waky Cas & Fev area is one of the hottest beds for RL, with a bit of luck we all might be able to keep hold of all the young players, instead of the Hull clubs, Huddersfield, & others tempting them away.

I'm looking forward to Dan Fleming making his debut this season. This kid will be better than Westerman IMO.

I think we are 4th behind Wigan, Saints and Leeds.

Based on entire squad lists:

Bradford 11/26
Castleford 11/26
Catalan (not sure on their French players)
Huddersfield: 9/28
Hull: 14/32
Hull KR: 10/31
Leeds: 16/24
London: 6/23
Salford: 11/31
St Helens: 20/31
Wakefield: 6/28
Warrington: 10/24
Widnes: 7/28
Wigan: 18/26

Although I'm sure if we did it actually on a fair comparison of the top 25 squad members then it would reduce some teams even further.

Total number to have played a SL game:
Bradford: 6/26 (23.
Castleford: 10/26 (38.5%)
Catalan (not sure on their French players)
Huddersfield: 6/28 (21.4%)
Hull: 9/32 (28.1%)
Hull KR: 6/31 (19.4%)
Leeds: 15/24 (62.5%)
London: 6/23 (26.1%)
Salford: 5/31 (16.1%)
St Helens:14/31 (45.2%)
Wakefield: 5/28 (17.9%)
Warrington: 9/24 (37.5%)
Widnes: 5/28 (17.9%)
Wigan: 17/26 (65.4%)

Where have you got the Wakefield one from,

Ours are

Wood
Cockayne
Cowling
Anakin
Wallshaw
Trout
Wildie
Kay

That's 8 mate.

More too the point it would have been a wee bit higher if Hudds hadn't of bled us dry in out hour of need.

Personally don't get this homegrown rubbish - exactly what is the advantage. Sure it worked for Leeds, but there have been many great teams who have had none local players as their backbone.

Manchester United barely have any Manchester based players in their team but they seem to go OK.

Players being local is a meaningless cliche IMHO, what makes a club great is the way it manages itself on and off the pitch and the desire that gives the team and you don't need to have come through the ranks to feel that.

Re: Tigers proud of youth products : Sun Feb 17, 2013 9:05 pm
Cockayne never played Super League with Wakefield before signing t'other season.

He started his career with Hunslet, then Doncaster, then joined Hull KR, where he made his SL debut. Therefore, he is not a product of Wakefield's academy.

Similarly, Kyle Wood never made his SL debut with Wakefield. He started his career in the lower leagues again with Doncaster, Sheffield before joining Huddersfield.

You Wakefield fans seem to think that homegrown is translated from "scholarship". It isn't. A player could play scholarship at 16 but then move on to another club, play academy for two seasons and then play semi-pro/pro debuts.

As such, homegrown is defined to me by where they make their semi-pro/pro debut.

As for the other points, the second bit is now 6/28 after Annakin played today (i believe). It may be the case that other clubs have signed your product but I guess that goes for all clubs. Indeed, Cas could point to the likes of Olivier Elima, Ryan Boyle, Liam Watts, Ben Gledhill, Shaun Lunt, Jamie Cording, Ben Blackmore, (Matt Dawson but never played first team), Westerman, Arundel, Lynch and so on as former products of our academy/first-team
