Wakey are sending some players out to other clubs, to get game time at the right level.

This wouldn't be the case if more clubs ran reserves, as the regular fixtures would be there. It needs to be a weekly comp and it's simply nowhere near at the moment.

The main problem with reserves is that as in my era lots of lads like me (handy playersbut not quiet good enough for first team) were around in good numbers, now where will you find the players? There are just not enough body’s to fill the positions anymore. The step up to full time pro is to great now even from championship level & the monetary rewards are not good enough for all but the most dedicated players. It’s a mater of demographics there are just not enough body’s to fill the places to achieve the standards the modern game requires.

Don’t agree at all that’s just a RL excuse. Wakefield could field two or three reserve teams if required though they couldn’t actually afford it - not suggesting that most would ever make pro but that’s not the point. Every year there are literally dozens of Academy players let go, all with nowhere to go - it’s tragic.

These Academy players are far better trained than those who used to play in the old A team structure which nullifies your argument imho.

The A teams fulfill three roles - keep/get first team players fit. Allow genuine up and comers with somewhere to play. Finally and most importantly to me allow late bloomers somewhere to bloom within their own team environment.

It doesn’t matter that the bulk of these players won’t make it, it’s the chance that some will.

It’s a myth that there is a shortage of players, there is imho a shortage of opportunities. That’s the problem and it’s a typically lazy (not digging at you) RL attitude to developing the game, always has been but never as bad as it is today.

Note: I know it works because in an odd way Trinity are SLs second chance team. Few of our players arrived with any reputation. Even our young home grown players are scraps from the West Yorks table Johnstone was going to give it up before we took him, Batchelor was playing College rugby for fun. None were signed as the best juniors in the area - goes to show when you look at Leeds the club who signed the so called best.

Not really the fact that we couldn’t afford it (as you well know ) just pretty pointless running one as Hull are running one and yet bring a 38 year old player out of retirement and Wakefield run one yet are sending players to Dewsbury to play so all in all the reserves are a big joke

If you mean the comp as it stands is a joke you have a point but those brave enough to do it should be applaueded if you mean the coceot is wrong then you couldn't be more wrong imho

Also of course you could afford it if you budgeted properly, you have way more cash than we do. Every team competition in the world runs a reserve - only SL is so short sighted, it’s very sad.

Personally I think all SL sides should be made to run reserve sides and do away with dual reg

You could run duel reg if you wanted, as an option, but you should be OBLIGATED to run a reserves team in a properly structured league, regardless.

I have to disagree with nearly all you have said, where are all the players you talk about? The Hull league this winter had to be called off as there were no teams! Most junior clubs are struggling for kids wanting to play the game. The local schools don’t play league now, even national league amateur clubs are calling off games through lack of numbers who can travel. In the professional game there are lots of players who would have got anywhere near the pro game. I don’t see what the RFL or anyone else can do if people are not having the numbers of children.

Addy making too many mistakes and costing us.

Drinkwater is getting into things a bit more now and improving.

Badly missing a good specialist Hooker (Lunt).

Forwards doing OK but dropping like flies through injury.

We’ve 3 wins from 8. Far from impressive, but by itself not enough explain our gloom imo.

I wonder if we’re just on an emotional come-down. As painful and potentially fatal as relegation was, it was also a kick up the backside and demanded a reaction. After clawing our way back over the next two years, maybe it was replaced by a sense of relief and we imagined better to come. Then we chuck away leads, start racking up injuries and thus going into games knowing we can’t win because our pack is underpowered, making it hard to be positive, or maybe even rational - I know I’m struggling!
