In last week's League Express, there was a letter from me about how mental health may suffer when players retire from playing, when referees retire from refereeing and when many supporters grow old. My suggestion to help stop or at least slow down this decline, is to start writing a novel based generally on your own life, your family and family history, employment, home town, your rugby league connections and other personal interests.
Many people who I have said this to have usually said that it seemed a good idea but then went on to tell me that they would have little or no idea how to even start it. For the benefit of such people I have written three pages of advice. I am in a good position to do this because since starting to write my first novel 'One Winter' as a hobby in 1988 I have now written nearly half a million words in six novels in a series that runs between 1962 and 2006 and most importantly, have thoroughly enjoyed doing it.. If you want me to send you this advice contact me at wgeofflee@gmail.com and ask for Geoff's RL Writing Advice. However if you prefer to read one of my novels first or even purchase one as a Christmas present for a relative or friend then I suggest that you get my latest novel which is called "Three Good Years" . It has a background of "Work, Family Life, Saving the NHS and Rugby League" all set between 2006 and 2008. Visit the web site of London League Publications at http://www.llpshop.co.uk.
