Re: Festive Football Chat : Wed Jan 13, 2010 11:25 pm
Just got back from the game.

Spineless performance by Liverpool. Reading should have been 2-0 after half an hour. Liverpool's goal was a simple deflection, though it was good work by Gerrard. 2nd half wasn't much better. Chances few and far between. Aquilani looked terrified to shoot when he was in space near the goal and instead tried to pick passes that most of the time went astray. He had a fantastic change with a header that should have gone in.

Reading had quite a number of chances to equalise which they didn't take. God knows how McAnuff missed that attempt. It was a fantastic run and he had 3 Liverpool defenders just running alongside him not even wanting to put a challenge in. I'll need to look at the pen decision again. Happened quite quickly.

Extra time - well the less said about that the better. I think the only highlight of the game was listening to Carra constantly berating Degen.

John Aldridge sounded like he was going to cry on City FM after the game. Reading fully deserved their win though. Liverpool are in a whole heap of trouble at the moment. Not heard Benitez's post match interview yet, but from what I've read, he was very evasive.

Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity

Just to avoid confusion Starbug is the username of Steven Pike

SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

Top 4 finishes plus champions league win along with the odd cup win is still a lot more than all but the other 3 have got anywhere near to in recent years

But unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat it could finally be the end

Re: Festive Football Chat : Wed Jan 13, 2010 11:40 pm
Really unsure what to think. Rafa made quite a few massive errors tonight which are happening more and more regularly.

1) Starting Torres and Gerrard, but for them to go off injured. Well, it's proved to be a risk that wasn't worth taking as we're out and they're now both injured, how long they're out, if they're out at all, remains to be seen.

2) Playing Dirk Kuyt on the right over Benayoun. Well, Dirk Kuyt is possibly the most talentless player at the club alongside Carragher, with regards to ability. He is utterly poor and I've always maintained this. Just like Lucas, it's alright piggybacking off the good form from the likes of Torres, Masch, Gerrard and Alonso. But when they're not playing or not firing, Kuyt and Lucas are exposed for the sub-par players they are, that only get played because they follow (pretty poor) tactics to Rafa's perfection.

3) Persisting with Benayoun on the left, even when Babel was brought on. Benayoun isn't a left sided player, every time he's played there he's gone missing and the only time he ever shows anything is when he's drifted in field or popped up on the right. One of only a few talented players playing tonight, but was largely wasted.

4) Bringing on Babel whilst N'Gog was on. Seriously, what did he do? All it resulted in us doing was hoofing it down field every single time. Reminiscent of Houllier at times tonight.

In all honesty, we were shocking, embarrassing at times. If we win at Stoke then that will obviously paper over a few cracks, but Rafa's on the thinnest of ice IMO. If people want to praise him with CL finals, runners up in the league and so on, then they have to be fair and criticize him for the form this year.

Read a quality quote before:

Hicks and Gillett are holding the club back from competing at the very top, Rafa is holding the club back from competing at any level.

I love the man but he's extremely lucky to still be employed.

Been a good month for the owners £6.5M made and a freebie signed.

And some people really thought we was going to pay £12/25M for that lad.

I still think we'll sign Chamakh. Although the rumoured signing on fee has been denied, if we do get him, he won't come cheap, especially as we're competing with some pretty well off clubs.

Even money from selling players is not getting invested back into the team.

The Yanks we defo not dip in the there own pockets and the banks won't loan us anymore.

Excellent signing.

Marginally better than Riera.
