Get the tram mate, piece of pi$$. It's only a couple of quid return. There's the Old Trafford stop on the Altrincham line, which stops next to the cricket ground, then it's just a straight walk up the street. Or you can get off at Exchange Quay on the Eccles line. Old Trafford is to your left(ish) as you get off, but you can't miss it.

Get the Altrincham tram to Old Trafford. You'll see the cricket ground on the other side, go under the tunnel and out next to it then walk straight up that road. It's about 600 yards up, you'll see it eventually.

Food wise... A few chippies and a Wetherspoons on Chester Road (you'll cross that on the way down to the ground.) That's about it though, don't expect major cuisine. There is a cafe inside the ground by the entrance to the museum as well, but I've never used it so can't comment.

I remember catching that to the England-Macedonia game in 2006 I think it was. Never again.

Tram to Old Trafford is probably your best bet, if I remember rightly the tram station is near the cricket ground but not far to walk.
