Maybe now would be the perfect time for someone like Martínez to take the reins at Anfield. He'd have to go some to do worse than Dalglish and no one expects you to qualify for the Champions League next season. A season to build, a season to consolidate and then the third to challenge.
Not really, if we aren't improving, fans will ask why was Kenny sacked. Our owners and some of our fans will expect us to qualify for the Champions League, if not qualify at least be up there challenging for it until the last month.
Basically, we need a modern coach, a coach capable of working alongside a DoF, yet somebody good enough to get us competing with the more established quality sides, like Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal and maybe even Newcastle if they keep their players. As I said, I like Martinez, but I think it's asking a lot of him to manage those expectations alongside the pressures of working at a big club with expectations. Say what you want about our poor performances on the field, we're still one of the biggest global brands around the globe, that matters when it comes to expectations and pressure.
For me, Martinez would be better off working his way through the 'food chain', if you will. Taste the Europa League, maybe even the Champions League if he's lucky, but to go from relegation survivor to big club with probable OTT expectations, it's just a bit much IMO.
