Right, as a non wigan supporter my opinion probably doesn't mean anything but … As a designer and someone who has worked in marketing for many years and worked with some pretty big brands, I will say this shirt is ridiculous, heres why. Your team in RL circles is massive, the name Wigan RL is probably one of the most recognisable names in RL, as are the colours your team play in. Why on earth when you have just won a championship and you get to play a WCC would your club decide to change one of the most famous and memorable aspects of your club - the team colours! if there was any time to release a kit that resembled the kit that your ultra successful team of the 80's wore it was now, horrendous piece of design, but above all, an horrendous waste of a marketing opportunity,. Imagine you all remembering the great 80's wigan team and then seeing what could be another great wigan team in similar colours.
Along with Bradfords effort, I actually find it offending that a professional designer has produced this.
I think this is what shocks me the most. IL and the team at Wigan have made a series of great decisions since taking over, from playing and coaching staff, to marketing and other back-office tasks.
But that someone at Wigan has not only signed that "design" off, but more crucially has overlooked the opportunity to capitalise on our fantastic GF win by putting out a classic and slightly retro Wigan shirt the fans will go nuts for and buy in massive numbers, amazes me. As it is, sales will be fairly good initially as the habitual die-hards get theirs, but will soon trickle away.
There's a fine line between innovative and ridiculous. I don't even need to see it in the flesh to know that shirt is ridiculous.
Huge own goal methinks. Oh, I probably won't mind it once it's more familiar and the season is in full flow, but I'm not wasting £43 on that.
