I may be misinterpreting your words, but are you suggesting the Tories are the party of transparency and non-self interst? I know '97 was a long time ago, but I am sure you can recall the cash for questions and general sleaze which made Labour's journey to Nr 10 rather easy.
Agreed, fag end of a Conservative administration which festered under Major's weak leadership through a poor electoral mandate, often direction-less and at odds with its core Conservatice principles.
Unless my memory has recently failed me I seem to also recall more recent comparable, if not more impressive, sleaziness from within the New Labour Government. Mandellsons double resignation, Keith Vaz, Lord Irvine, Ron Davies, leadership campaign funding, expense claims etc etc. Even our dear old Lord Hoyle is not immune and was condemned for being in the employ of an arms dealer. (web references can be sent for all of these points by the way)
At times like this I often like to quote William Hague in 1997 "Their (The Labour party's) politics without conscience brought fascination
to begin with, then admiration; next it will bring
disillusion; finally it will being contempt."
How true. Thank god it's coming to an end soon.
