Anyone know the actual ruling on this? When Carney made the break last night, after play the ball think Saint had no men onside apart from tacklers of previous tackle, Walsh blatantly stopped Lui from strolling in. Sin binned fair enough, but what's the ruling? For me he was denied a clear try.

Essentially a professional foul, sin bin. The decision was probably right.

Said the same at the game last night, can't see any justification for not giving it as it was blatant, not the only balls up though, one conversion in the 2nd half sailed through but for some reason was waived away.

You'd have hated for either of those to have had a baring on a tight game or for points difference to be an issue for the top 8 come the end of the regular season.

Cummings claimed Makinson (the second man in the Walsh tackle) was onside so the penalty try not an issue.

For a penalty try the ref needs to be beyond any doubt that a try would have been scored had the infringement not taken place. The fact that Makinson (who was a square marker I think) was also involved in the tackle makes it hard to give a penalty try. Fwiw I think he would have strolled in, but Makinson was close enough to put a challenge in, so no try was the right call imo.

The updated rule for 2016 doesn't recognize players onside or offside it is purely down to whether the player would of scored or not.

Eight point try

A clarification has been made to the law with the objective of removing any ambiguity over action following a player being fouled in the act of scoring as follows:

(a) If a defending player fouls an opponent who is in the act of “touching down for a try”, and who proceeds to score the try, a penalty kick at goal shall be awarded by the referee after the attempt to convert the try. The penalty shall be awarded on the 10m line in front of the offending team’s goal posts. The non-offending team must kick for goal and, if the attempt for goal is successful, shall be awarded an additional two points. Whether the attempt at goal is successful or unsuccessful, the game shall be restarted, in the usual manner.

(b) The phrase “touching down for a try” refers to such a period which commences when, in the sole discretion of the referee or video referee, it is evident that a try is going to be scored by the player who is fouled and which ends when the referee awards the try or calls time off to refer the decision to the video referee or to consult with other colleagues.

(c) For the avoidance of doubt a foul which is committed (i) on any other attacking player other than the player who is “in the act of scoring a try”; (ii) at any time other than when that player is “touching down for a try” or (iii) where a try is not scored as a result of the foul play or otherwise, shall not result in a further penalty being awarded by the referee as described above, but this shall not preclude the referee taking any other action against the offending player as the referee shall in his sole discretion determine.

To be honest I thought saints got away with a lot at the play the ball constantly holding our players down but was never called yet Tomkins couldn't get out the way and the penalty was given to the Saints. Could of been a even more embarrassing score line for them. Lets just hope we can kick on and finish as high up the table as possible

He wasn't in the act of touching down so this doesn't apply. Makinson wasn't committing any offence by tackling Lui therefore no guarantee that he would have scored. Fwiw i think he would have.

You are quoting 8 point try rules. That is different to a penalty try.
