Doesn't play so well in the written word but wasn't the original joke something about which being heavier, a tonne of gold or a ton of lead? Given that whilst the pronunciation is the same the standard measurement of one is Imperial and the other Metric?

I always remember it being feathers, but not there being the imperial/metric part. I guess its a joke with many variations.
Kind of like Watt is the unit of power?
