if Cas offered him more than wakey (IF!) then it may be due to the fact that they didn't have much more to spend. You guys have already signed a couple for next year, maybe they were taking up the money available?
If he was on 40k, wakey may have said "we cannot afford to increase your wage due to the funds being made available elsewhere" .....cas said "ok we will offer you 45k"
it doesn't seem like wakey "weren't bothered" about keeping him, if they were negotiating a contract - clubs just don't renew them if they aren't bothered.
Cash strapped or not, if you aren't bothered about keeping a player, why negotiate to keep paying his wages?
