Whats the difference in the two Pro Evo demo's? I saw it last night but there was other stuff I bought on the store instead and it was gettin late so thought I'd download it some point over the weekend!
I hate to say it, but those raving about this Fifa demo are too dim to see the con that is Fifa.
The only thing 'new' about the 'player assist' is that the player who closes down for you doesn't fly in with a tackle now like he used to. You can still get him to close the space and you can still close the space, adding the 'new' tackle button (which is really an old button put back on) has added nothing. Apparently, you tap O when near a player to pull his shirt or give him a tug, I've found this feature to be inconsistent, I'll tap it, he'll pull him a little, I'll tap it again and he'll attempt to tackle, the problem is, I wasn't in a position to tackle, so I just lose all momentum and end up in a crud situation.
The shooting has changed, not for the better really. More/most shots go low and hard, but placed shots seem to loop in either corner with relative ease. The problem with shooting has never been the way it looked, so the change seems needless.
The new slide tackling will take a while to get used to, and does every tackle have to be the sort of 'hook tackle'? i.e. The player runs in, slides but also kicks the ball away in the process.
I've enjoyed some of the passing, it's very delicate and some of the passing matches the quality of some of the runs you make. It still seems a bit glitchy in moments, like I've held the pass button and my player has just stood over the ball in what seemed like a daze.
My mate has been on it whilst I was watching the rugby, get on this replay he's just uploaded at mine:

Also, another thing, am I the only one slightly embarrassed by the 'new' commentary?
They've added Alan Smith, but that's all they've done, they've just added him. They've kept most of Tyler's commentary, so when Smith actually speaks, it sounds as though it wasn't recorded with Tyler's stuff. Tyler's stuff sounds just like it does for Sky, but Smith's isn't as clear and actually seems quieter, whether that's intentional or not, I don't know. I can see why they've added him, they sponsor Sky so I'm sure they just wanted the two lead commentators, but they should have revamped the commentary in its entirety, not just 'deleted' Andy Gray and added Smith.
Anyway, I'm really let down by this Fifa demo and I actually regret pre-ordering it. I'll have to give it a chance because I always do, but I'm definitely giving PES a punt this year, if it plays like the demo (I'm downloading demo 2 right now) then it'll be superb.
Roddy B I have read all the discussion over FIFA vs Pro Evo and I've got to say I agree with every single word you have written. I have admittedly been a pro evo player ever since the days of ISS pro, but I also used to play FIFA (best game without doubt being RTWC 98). Pro peaked around ISS Pro Evolution 2 IMO, but all the PES series have been decent. FIFA on the other hand is sluggish, repetetive and down right boring IMO. You will have to trust me I have tried very hard to get into the series, I own Fifa 10 and 11, and regularly play with my mates online or at home because it is the game they all play. I seriously think that FIFA is a case of 'the king has no clothes', and even the recent Pro Evo games (which have admittedly regressed, or not progressed as far as they should have), are far far ahead of FIFA in terms of gameplay, which is what it should be about, not having every team in Europe with the correct 3rd kit and stats for their reserve team.
If you've read every word Roddy has put, you'll see he is very consistent in his dislike of FIFA. Some games are like that, no matter how you try and no matter how good they're meant to be, you just can't like them. I'm the same with Call of Duty, just don't get the appeal of it.
Pro Evo isn't better than FIFA IMO. It's passing and movement are like FIFA was about 5 years ago. Momentum and body shape mean nothing and you can ping passes about ridiculously effectively, it doesn't even bother to animate them properly either. You can make 50 yard passes along the deck to a player's feet like there is no friction with the grass and the player's control the ball with such perfection everytime. Some of the controls are ridiculous, like the off the ball stuff and the skill moves.
If anything the football games have changed roles. Pro Evo is better graphically and feels more glossy, it's immediate feel is more fluid and quick. FIFA however is far more realistic and deep. The demo is pretty glitchy and there is room for improvement in a few areas, but you can do some brilliant things with a bit of skill and I'm still seeing new things on FIFA 11 and I've had it 12 months. I think EA have been really brave with FIFA 12, they've made some choices in pursuit of realism that may well reduce the entertainment value in the short term. It's certainly not as 'pick up n' play' as it traditionally was. But the tactical defending now brings a whole new dimension to it and there is now a sense of achievement in breaking down an attack, where before it was just a case of spamming the homing missile pressure button and then going gung ho to score. Now you have to work to get the ball, you are not so keen on giving it away again.
Both quality games, just buy the one you prefer and ignore the other one.

I'm not even a regular PES player. I've played Fifa since Fifa 96, I played the old ISS games and I playes PES through the PS2 days. Since I can't chip my PS3, I've generally stuck to Fifa as that's what all my mates play, but through the years, its flaws become more and more consistent. I've compared it to another franchise - Call of Duty - in that it's similarly flawed, yet little is done to try and prevent those flaws, as the flaws cater for the 'newer market', i.e. those who are just getting into the game/series. I don't want to sound arrogant, but I've played Fifa for fifteen years, when I get good at something, I generally want things to become more challenging, more detailed and require greater skill. I don't want the same old flaws, I want to enjoy the game and utilise all of its capabilities. I could go on all day and night about Fifa's flaws and problems, but I'd just be repeating stuff that always comes out.
It's a new day so I've decided to give it another go. Believe it or not, it's even poorer than yesterday.
I'm not sure how well documented it's been, but you can turn the new tactical defending off and put the old 'legacy' defending back on. Basically, they've added a completely new feature, aimed at stopping something that destroys online play and general play, and they've decided to give you the option to turn it off and go back to the old times. So, basically, I play my routine Fifa game: hold circle, let the CPU tackle the players for me whilst I jockey the space in case they decide to sprint. Real easy.
I've been on YouTube trying to find some vids of goals, skill and so on. All I seem to see is videos making a mockery of the game's demo, uploads of the stupid rag doll physics and mind numbing pieces of play that have been present since the original Fifa's in the 90's.
I'm sorry, but EA should absolutely panned for the drivel they serve up year in and out. They make minor tweaks every year, visual tweaks that never affect the core gameplay. When they try to bring something in to change it, they give the option to turn it off and basically go back to the original problem. I'm sorry, but it just makes a mockery of the tutorial they ask you to take at the start, it makes a mockery of the work they put in, and the only reason they add it is so the people who can't adjust can go back to the stuff that makes it so easy for them.

The option to turn it off is designed for people under 7 according to EA themselves.
For online games other than unranked friends matches it will not be possible to change it.
Saddened, can you give me a run down of what ultimate team is all about? I think I'm going to opt for fifa 12 this year but I'm not sure whether to preorder or just wait and see if some superstores do a cheap deal. It seems like preorders get you some stuff for ultimate team but I have no idea what it is. Is it like a card game, like top trumps or something?

You start off with a set of pretty average cards and have to play matches either online (More coins) or offline with that team to earn coins. You can then use those coins to purchase packs of cards or to trade cards online in ebay style auctions. The aim is to amass enough coins to get a good squad together. There is also links between players, so if you had an Italian Serie A right back and an Italian Serie A right winger they would get a boost in their stats because of their links. There are also cards for balls, kits, stadiums, managers etc that you can use which also give your side a boost in their stats. There are also grades of cards, golds for your top level players, silver for your championship level players and bronze for lower league players. There are then online and offline tournaments to play in with those squads. For example bronze only tournaments where only bronze cards can compete. The cards are released over time so new players are always becoming available and there are special cards that reflect the star performers each week in real life.
It's a game mode I mocked when I first read about it, but was hooked by for a good 6 months after I tried it.
