Millwall BLM : Wed Dec 09, 2020 8:18 am
Were the Millwall crowd booing because they disagree with BLM or was it that they didn't want football politicised??

The media seem to have focused on racism whereas there is a second school of thought that everything seems to be politicised today and maybe football is the escape from it. Rugby union as an organisation have come up with messaging regarding equality etc and removed the kneeling pre game.

I think you're giving them WAY too much credit. They were booing because they are incapable of differentiating between the BLM organisation which many find distasteful, and the quest for equality that the BLM movement seeks to drive. As soon as someone knows they aren't the same thing then booing is just weird if you ask me.

It’s Millwall. If the EFL had a club for the EDL, it’d be Millwall.

That's true but, the level of hypocrisy in football about racism and respect are appalling.
They love a campaign and a grand headline but, dont actually enforce or police these issues properly.

As for Milwall fans specifically, they have plenty of "previous".
To excuse them is just another example of the hypocrisy thet exists.

I agree that football leads the way when it comes to disrespect. I'd say that the concept of a minutes applause was invented almost entirely because soccer fans couldn't be trusted to respect a minutes silence. How many times have you been to the Rugby and heard a pin drop at a minutes silence. Even for the kit man at a club you don't like you'd bow your head and remain silent because it's the decent and normal thing to do. But in Soccer rather than address the issue, they switched it to an applause. Total cop out in the same way as Millwall and QPR linking arms was.

In my view it is exposing a divide rather than creating one. On the flipside, this racism malarky and has no place in sport... or wider society. Although, obviously, in the real world it does.

If you accept the protest, then you have to tolerate the counter protest (to the point were there's still some theoretical degree of uncertainty about the sentiments underpinning it). However, it is one of those emotive issues on which people will judge each other and be judged in turn. I'll acknowledge the internal logic and possibility of the boos at Millwall being a protest against politicalization of sport. However, I don't believe it and I believe less and less in the good faith of some of these arguments and some of the people making them. Nature of division, I suppose.

It is probably all down to economics and/or the size of our amygdalas.

So if some footballers want to show their solidarity with the EDL and Tommy Robinson, are they not allowed to do that at Millwall, because their fans have decided that "we can't have politics in football".

They don't mean they don't want that kind of politics in football.
