On average they will be but if you look at the attendances for the individual matches some are actually up whilst other are massively down. There seems to be a core level of support of around 5,000 which is roughly the same as last year. The drops have come from games that usually attract a large number of floating supporters (both home and away fans), e.g. Leeds and Bradford down by 3,000. This backs up the idea that the main cause of the drop in attendances is the financial climate - people who choose to go to a few matches are choosing not to.

It will be interesting to see if the promotions/discounts for the Celtic game manage to buck this trend.

Compared to last year

We only have 2 attendances compared to last year that are up.
St Helens and Harlequins, all the rest are down.

We need to beat 8,822 to beat the Hull KR game of last year (unlikely but not impossible)

Overall a poor year for attendances but not disastrous.

I would add a couple of issues into the mix which may not have a direct effect, but which do colour the back-ground:

One is the stadium - especially the let-down of Thornes Park. Many of us feared that it was only a matter of time before dropped off the face of the earth at that time. This was at a point when season tickets are normally sold and that, together with a relative lack of new signings, did not 'inspire' our support base.

Two is the loss of Adam / Leon and other sad issues. The club, and it's fans, may have won much appreciation for their efforts in this, but I cannot help but feel that being connected to such sadness is not condusive towards selling tickets - nor does it seem relevant either!

So, added to the credit crunch, I feel that we have not done too badly overall, but I do know that it has made life difficult for the BoD and they have had to juggle a little to get around it all.

So the message going forward now is very much 'onwards and upwards' and let's have a bit of fun around the place once more! :D

Thats when the new stadium comes into it's own again, modern stadia is alot easier to police (steward) seating plans CCTV etc and alot more family friendly. It's a case of making the most of what we've got at Belle Vue until we move to Stanley
