That would be fair comment if that was the effect.
But losers are still two points behind winners.
2-1-0, 3-2-1, 10-8-6, 80-42-4, 2,000,000-1,999,995-1,999,990 - none of these points systems alter the positions between the teams.
The real losers are the teams who lose by more than 12.
Sorry if the maths is beyond you.
Would you be happier if we keept 2-1-0 with a point deducted if you lose by more than 12 ?
Apologies in advance for the table formats, can someone tell me how to make them “nice”?
Griff, well I’m glad your maths is better than ours.
You are quite right, in that the systems you mention above would make no difference to the overall league positions, however we are not using any of these systems, we are using a 3-2-1-0 system that does make a difference.
For example the current table under the old system would be:
Pos Name P W D L F A Diff Pts
1 Halifax RLFC 9 7 0 2 299 173 126 14
2 Featherstone Rovers 9 7 0 2 279 232 47 14
3 Leigh Centurions 8 6 0 2 238 148 90 12
4 Sheffield Eagles 9 6 0 3 315 235 80 12
5 Keighley Cougars 8 5 0 3 205 116 89 10
6 Batley Bulldogs 9 5 0 4 209 159 50 10
7 Dewsbury Rams 9 4 0 5 187 224 -37 8
8 Swinton Lions 9 3 0 6 184 256 -72 6
9 Hunslet Hawks 9 1 0 8 106 324 -218 2
10 York City Knights 9 0 0 9 118 273 -155 0
This would have place Keighley and Leigh a place higher than they are now.
And last year’s table was:
Pos Name P W D L F A Diff Bns Ded Pts
1 Featherstone Rovers 20 18 1 1 840 348 492 0 0 56
2 Leigh Centurions 20 18 1 1 776 368 408 1 -3 53
3 Batley Bulldogs 20 12 0 8 498 406 92 0 0 41
4 Sheffield Eagles 20 12 0 8 577 488 89 0 0 39
5 Widnes Vikings 20 11 1 8 555 532 23 0 0 38
6 Halifax RLFC 20 10 0 10 569 543 26 1 0 36
7 Hunslet Hawks 20 4 1 15 395 630 -235 3 0 20
8 York City Knights 20 5 1 14 416 788 -372 3 0 19
9 Dewsbury Rams 20 4 1 15 413 618 −205 0 0 18
10 Toulouse Olympique(R) 20 4 0 16 358 663 −305 0 0 15
11 Barrow Raiders (R) 20 9 0 11 527 540 -13 1 -18 10
This would have as follows under the old system:
Pos Name P W D L F A Diff Bns Ded Pts
1 Featherstone Rovers 20 18 1 1 840 348 492 0 0 37
2 Leigh Centurions 20 18 1 1 776 368 408 1 -2* 35
3 Batley Bulldogs 20 12 0 8 498 406 92 0 0 24
4 Sheffield Eagles 20 12 0 8 577 488 89 0 0 24
5 Widnes Vikings 20 11 1 8 555 532 23 0 0 23
6 Halifax RLFC 20 10 0 10 569 543 26 1 0 20
7 York City Knights 20 5 1 14 416 788 -372 3 0 11
8 Dewsbury Rams 20 4 1 15 413 618 −205 0 0 9
9 Hunslet Hawks 20 4 1 15 395 630 -235 3 0 9
10 Toulouse Olympique(R) 20 4 0 16 358 663 −305 0 0 8
11 Barrow Raiders (R) 20 9 0 11 527 540 -13 1 -12* 6
*Note I have amended the points deductions for Leigh and Barrow in line with 2pts for a win.
Now this doesn’t appear on the face of it to be that material, in that Hunslet are a couple of places higher than they would have been using the old 2-1-0 system, since it has not affected the play-off places or relegation places.
That is until you consider what would have happened if Barrow had not had any points deduction applied, in this case it would have been Dewsbury being relegated under the current 3-2-1-0 system, whereas the old system would have meant Hunslet would have been relegated.
Bottom line is that it does make a difference whether you use the current 3-2-1-0 or old 2-1-0 system and you can debate the merits of both systems. Does this make a "BIG" difference and does it mater I'll let you decide.
However for me as long as everyone knows at the beginning of the year what the system is and it is consistent and the criteria doesn’t change during the course of year, then it shouldn’t matter, since we all know what we are being judged on from the off and what we have to achieve.
