No WC match for Sheffield? : Mon Nov 28, 2011 6:18 pm
Although I have no connections to Sheffield, I'm quite disappointed that there wasn't a decent bid (key word there is 'decent') put in. Equally disturbing is that no-one here seems to have batted an eyelid that you guys missed out. Do you guys even care? This could have been a great opportunity for rugby league in Sheffield, if a serious bid was put forward you could well have hosted an England group match or a knockout match....

As far as we are aware a very serious bid was put in by both sheffield and donny. I cannot believe that Halfax as got a match the ground is the pits, could it be a sop for them not getting not getting super league status. also why have three quarter finals gone to a 20 mile radius warrington wigan and wreham nothing that the RFL does ever makes any sense.

This list of venues is a total and complete embarassment for the RFL.

The first mistake is to spread the games out over a 1500 miles radius. Arent we supposed to be in a recession? Are people going to travel those distances for games? Didnt Toulouse withdraw from NL1 due to costs? Baffling.

We here in Sheffield had a very serious bid. RL is very much on the up here. We reached the grand final which has sparked interest, Aston is the Ireland coach and we have a huge youth system. The game is really growing in Sheffield. A World Cup game (well promoted) in Sheffield could be a massive step for the growth of the game. The decision not to award Bramall Lane even one game is bad enough, but some of the "stadiums" (and i use that term very loosley in some cases) that have been chosen are just ridiculous.

Isnt this World Cup supposed to be held in England and Wales? So why have France and Ireland got games? Have the UK annexed these countries into the commonwealth?

Bristol, i know the sonics are doing an outstanding job promoting the game in the area and they deservce credit for that, but is the city really going to attract a massive crowd for an RL game. I expect not.

Halifax, could someone explain why The Shay has been chosen ahead of Bramall Lane and the Keepmoat, both of which have much better facilities and capacities and are not even a hour away?

Rochdale? I dont even know where to start.

Neath? You cant get there by train and back at a civilised time and the ground is pathetically small.

I can only assume that the RFL are going for smaller grounds for better atmospheres. This is going to be a huge error if the local population doesnt attend. And given the scattered nature of the venues, its going to be mostly local crowds going.

It really does defy belief. Just when you think the RFL cant humiliate itself anymore, it sinks to a new low.

Time for a top level clearout. We need a full review and a new list of venues drawing up before this whole thing decends into farce.

You forgot, to mention Whitehaven. I'm happy for them but surely our World Cup deserves better than a 5000 seater...

Limerick is a terrible decision, after the turnout they had a few weeks ago against France.

Avignon and Perpignan I can live with because I know they'll get big turnouts, but I do see where you're coming from.

Neath, may not look good on TV, but hopefully it will give the Scorpions a bit of a boost down there...

It's a shame there will be no World Cup matches here, they have well and truly missed the trick. However the decisions are made and The RFL really have to get the marketing right with this World Cup, especially in these non-heartlands towns.

I've commented a few times on the VT. I can't believe that neither Sheffield or Doncaster got anything.

And Whitehaven 5000? It's not even going to be that big...

The role of the local councils had a big influence in the decisions of who got awarded the games

Once again the RFL have got it wrong. In my opinion both Sheffield and Donny could have both hosted games. We have two semi pro teams who are doing ok but both could do with a boost. I suppose you could say we are both semi expansion teams but our proximity to the heartlands would help boost the crowds.
Would a joint bid have gone down better with the RFL or were they just not interested in either of us in any case?

We're used to being overlooked. Name another club which has been denied central prize money. There aren't many but it's happened to us twice. :FRUSRATED:

ESO - have a word with your dad.
