| Quote barham red="barham red"To be fair to Joel he does run it in at pace and certainly doesn't do the highland jig 3 paces before the line surrender like a lot do. The main problem with our packs line speed is that we play a flat line and the forwards never seem to get the ball and are allowed to run at pace (except from the kick off etc). Add to that he got some stinkers of passes yesterday and had to check his run to catch the ball and losing the momentum.'"
Joel does hit the ball up hard and makes good yards, but the fact he is a straight line runner rather than a prop with footwork and technique is why i would use him from the bench where i think he'd be far more useful to the team. Also i'm assuming when you said line speed you meant ruck speed. Rovers ruck speed problems are down in main to slow and inconsistent play the ball speed. Its an area Rovers have show very little improvement in imo.

| Seen him a few times on SKY. If you watch the youtube footage he looks very impressive (until the head clash) and I've seen none of that in the games I've watched him play

I'll answer anyway.
I think it's a combination of having no recognised quality 6, not using Murrell at 13, Galea and Newton not living up to last years form and a relatively weak front row with only Clinton and Vella been upto it and even then Vella is strapped up like mad every week. I also think there's a serious lack of impact from Rovers interchange bench, something which most top teams need.
Just my view looking from the outside and based purely on what i see on TV and the reports i read.

You seriously thought Clinton was mom yesterday?? FWIW i didn't think Vella was either but he played a hell of a lot more minutes than Clinton and was completely error free.

One of the best of a very average bunch imo, play anyone half decent and we would of lost by 18 not won by it.
Agreed Welham was also one of the better ones... but for me should of got binned for the extremely late tackle, but keeping him on made up for the late one on Dobson.
Oh and for me, this season is 1 to many for Vella nevermind hes contracted til 2011, He looks like an old man playing rugby now.

I think its glaringly obvious that we need a quality 6 and i would also agree that we dont have enough impact coming off the bench. Perhaps bringing Clinton off the bench could go some way to rectifying that but i dont think it is why Morgan brought him across.
I would like to see Murrell back at 13 if only because Hodgson and Fisher both deserve to stay in the 17 but i still think he has the makings of a good hooker. At the minute he has to stay at 6 because we have no other option.

He wouldn't play any less minutes coming off the bench than he does as a starting prop and would be far more effective imho.

I think trying to play Murrell at 9 was up there with trying to play Jake Webster at 6 and falling out with Cooke in the size of mistakes made by Morgan.
For me Galea Newton and Murrell won you a lot of the games last year that you played well in.

Dont think its been harsh at all, hes been a great player for us for quite awhile now but he cant live off past performances, and hes been very below average for more then 2010 season imo.

If it ain't broke and all that !!
The problem is 6, we need the back three to be Galea, Newton and Murrell, they work the best in those positions IMO. We need to try someone out at 6 this season, but it seems JM is happy to sit it out and sign for 2011. We might have someone who could do a Steve Hartley and convert successfully, just like Pryce at Saints. By all accounts the young lad Bell is tipped for success, but we get the usual problem here of 'he's only 18', when in fact several 18 and 19 year olds have already made it into the England side over recent years (young Briscoe at Hull for one).
We need to do something rapidly at off half, because when we are up against quality we have no answer recently.

I still think Rovers need more up front too but getting the back row back to like last season would be a good start. At 6 i think Rovers would be better playing I'Anson there or looking to bring in a loan signing rather than using Murrell.

I'anson has been tried and shipped out on loan. The lad did his best, but TBH he has not got what it takes in SL. Murrell is not a 6 or a 9 and is definately suited to loose man. We could do with a big aggressive prop next season to replace at least one (probably Wheeldon) who will go, someone in the Crabtree style, hard to handle with a good offload. Watts is looking more and more the part, he is big and as time goes on he is getting more agressive with it (in a controlled manner) and he has definately got an offload.

Don't agree.
I simply don't see him as a loose forward and i'm not sure what he actually brings to the position. He has all the skills necessary to be a pretty decent No.9 and i think thats where he'll end up.

The lad may have played at s/o but was never given a proper role in the side.
