Not so much cash as space on the cap. I think we have a shed load of high earning, under performing players that have used all the cap up so we are fuct.
Aye, it's easy to forget where a player's stock was when we signed them. Dixon was an England Knights starlet, who was going to be our first choice fullback. Now he has the odd cameo appearance from the bench as an impact winger. Campese was our talisman, who was rumoured to be interesting Wigan, but he's barely played since signing his new deal. We were absolutely desperate for a prop when we signed Tilse. Kelly, Thornley, Lunt, Allgood, Blair and Sio are likely on decent money.
On the other hand Rob Crossland suggested pre-season that we had a bit of space available, if the right player was available (iirc). Peacock said that Shaw's injury (and presumably Salter's) created an opportunity to make a signing. He's since said that the de-registration rules have changed, but hasn't explained in what way. And at the fans forums, it was said that options were being explored - maybe it was dependent on moving somebody on?
I'm not that keen on holding people to quotes - to mis-speak or get something wrong isn't a crime. But there have been mixed, or at best unclear, messages IMO.
Still this is where we are. Hopefully we can find a killer instinct from somewhere and make our (relative) quality tell against the Championship teams (who'll all be targeting us as the most likely SL scalp they could take), and catch one of the others off-guard. Fingers crossed.
