The plural was used because it is grammatically correct. Using the plural in that sentence does not imply any particular number of trophies; it invites a comparison between the number of major trophies recently won by either club.

Try substituting the word 'trophy' for 'trophies' to see what I mean.

Another example of the same usage would be the sentence "how many wheels does a Unicycle have?"
