If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle.
You're right. Even up to only ten years ago, Hull was a bit of a dump. There's been a monumental shift this last decade. I know people out of the city that come and visit, And the're always blown away how much it's changed. And keeps on evolving to. The fruit area is going to be massive for the city.
Just to add to this...I'm a Leyther, been in York for 25 years and visited Hull a couple of years ago for a gin festival. That was held in the fruit market down on the docks. (?). If ever I've been at somewhere at the "cutting edge" then that was it ! I'm not sure my Mrs was knocked out by the place but I certainly was! I loved it and think it's a lot going for it. History etc was superb. We stayed on the Saturday night and sadly most of the museums etc didn't open until about 1pm on the sunday which was a real downer as we had to leave about 1.30...should I also say lovely train station at 1.30! I'm sure that the year of culture stuff will change that...hope so. Sadly I think most of the leigh fans ( and other rugby fans) will never get the chance to see the town worth visiting! Barcelona? No...but well worth a weekend visit! If ever there was a undiscovered gem it's this place.

Have you been back since to visit the museums etc? If you're into that kind of thing then its a great day out (or longer if you want it to be), the history of Hull is diverse and fascinating.
I work and spend most of my time in Scotland these days. Every time I return to Hull (usually every couple of months or so) there have been new building erected, or roads repaired, or something has changed. There is alot going on for the City of Culture and whilst dodging barriers in the city centre is a pain in the ar*e just now, its going to be great when its all done.
The problem the area has is that it's reputation precedes it. People that have never been (or haven't been for a long time) like to mock the area and put it down. But you are proof that if we can get people to visit once, they will see what a little gem it is and will want to come back. Next year should go along way towards changing reputations if we do things right.

Just a footnote to my opening post:-
We thoroughly enjoyed our couple of days in Hull. We actually got parked at the stadium - just as well, given the awful weather!
The barriers in the centre are a pain, but all should be worthwhile in the end, and will enhance some superb architecture. The old town is delightful, the area around the waterfront and marina is superb, and the (free) museums look good. (we spent a morning in the superb maritime Museum in the centre)
An added bonus was the Freedom Festival - an annual event, with multiple acts - that just happened to be on, at the time of our visit.
Oh, and the rugby match was brilliant!! We got to spend some quality time in the midst of some great company, in the Roger Millward stand.

Good luck with the rest of the Qualifiers
Nice of you to take the trouble to provide such positive feedback and wish us well. Same to you.
You are clearly a nice man with some likely East Hull red and white ancestry or bloodline. I look forward to seeing you on a future edition of Long Lost Family on the telly. You might be a distant relation of Colin Hutton, you never know. We can always work on flattening your vowels to make you fit in.
Charlie clearly knows nowt about chippies as they should involve neither goose fat nor lard.
It should be dripping.
Next you'll be telling us the fish should be Cod.
I've run my own chippy for 43 years now , as well as performing in the Blackpool Tower Circus,Goose Fat is the best way of rendering potatoes and helps with the browning and crispness. The Carolis were first class goat herders in the 8's and this helped when checking the free range tripe and belly pork.

Oh, "vowels". You had me worried there for a moment!
Haven't managed to trace any Yorkshire blood, back through the family tree, but have to admit, despite being a fervent Lancastrian, that my favourite place on earth, is the Yorkshire Dales. Or does that put me in danger of being affiliated with Bradford, Halifax or Leeds?!

Goose fat yes, for roast potatoes.
Not for chips.
I like you, I think we'll be good friends.
The Terrorist's have always been big fans of tripe and belly pork, Grandad Terrorist was a fish filleter on the docks, cooked a mean scallop.
