The Championship is an incredibly tough league.
Whilst the club is making the right noises about trying to get as high up the league as possible, I suspect that unless we sign a good quota of players of a significantly higher standard to add to the squad, the balance of probability is that we’re likely to be in the bottom six and probably involved in a battle not to get relegated.
This is not meant to be a statement of doom and gloom but an acknowledgement that the challenges we face in bridging the significant gap in standards between the two divisions are significant.
Is part of the thinking with two-year contracts a form of insurance in that if we do come down we would still be keeping some of our best players for the challenges the following season?
As K&C states, there are risks attached to giving older players longer contracts as injuries, worn out bodies and a decline in ability could all come into play.
