Pinning our hopes on a marquee signing won't fix our issues.
We need some strength in depth for a start. 2x Props, 1 utility back, 1 half and a hooker. If Mau is released (which I'd do) we'll need a 2nd row too.
Bowden, Masi, Shaul, Taylor have hardly played. In Masis case not at all.
Plus the longterm injuries to Griffin, Cator and Reynolds have really tested an already thin squad.
We've lost Jones, Ellis, Kelly and Naulago going into this season and only brought Reynolds in.
I'd agree 1 marquee player doesn't fix things on the field, but it makes an impact of it and sells passes. The club needs money but may need to spend some money to make some money

Its a salary cap sport though. I'd imagine any bigger name player would be 2023.

I disagree. Put your money into your best starting team and let the youngsters make up the squad, and when the youngsters come into the team, they'll be playing with better, more consistent players, instead of the inconsistant team they're coming into now.

You can still backload contracts. The last time we finished this low was 2009, where we got off to a stormer and won our first 5 them ended up 2nd bottom, we then signed Long, Fitzgibbon and O'Meley to shift passes and from a commercial perspective it worked. The disgruntled fans aren't going to be hyped by a few squad players coming in.

Er, no. We finished 8th in 2011, 11th in 2014, 8th in 2015 and 8th in 2018.

Backloaded contracts don’t work the same in this country as they do in Australia. In this country cap value is taken as an amalgamation over the full length of the contract rather than the year by year earnings, making them very ineffective at getting around the cap for a single year.

14 team league and Super8's (and therefore harder fixtures) in some of those years though. 8th in 2011 was somewhat laughably a playoff place. I'd erased 2014 from my memory!
Was pretty ambivalent watching it today. Found it very difficult to get that invested in the game.
I’ll be renewing, mainly because my son and daughter want a pass again next season. Really not sure what I’d do if I didn’t have that as a motivating factor.
Indeed, though the 2 year deals for Connor and Satae maybe show we've learnt a lesson. For any player not matter how good they are 3 years can be a long time in sport, fitness and form can drop suddenly
Successful teams frequently give contracts of longer than two years. Successful teams generally but not always give long term contracts to the players who subsequently prove they deserved them.
If that doesn't give us a wake up call nothing will.
Our performances Rovers game apart have been pathetic the last 10 games, you only have to look at the effort of Salford, Hudds and Wakey the last few games, none of these have anulyhthing to play for but are still playing to win.
Big chances needed, does Pearson have the balls or cash?
