Richard Horne at Full Back : Wed Jun 16, 2021 11:47 am
Was watching a retro game on Sky last week, and Horney was playing for GB.
Got me thinking about a discussion I had few years ago with a fellow FC fan.

We both maintained he was the best full back we never had. His running and evasive skills would have been great in that position. Also very quick.
I wonder if he was playing now, he’d had gravitated towards that position?

Never thought Horney got all the credit he deserved at times, but as a full back I think he’d have gone to another level.

At the time having a pivot at 1 was less of a priority and so we had him in the halves so he'd see more ball. And also because we just couldn't sign anyone better at halfback but had loads of options at fullback. In the modern game he'd be a natural 1.

I always thought his best position was centre. He was a strong tackler and had good defensive positioning. With his ball skills and running ability I think he'd have been world class. MacRae played him there as a teenager and he looked like a natural.

I always seem to think Richard Horne is one of those players that was never really truly appreciated when he played, only when he was out through injury or when he retired that you realised he was more than just a decent player, he was very good.

Don't know if you was around in 2006

But everyone knew what a player Horne was, 11 games on the bounce to equal the try record

He was awesome esp from 2004 to 2006 and got many GB caps on his day one of the best half's in the league ( and winger )

And he was a brilliant full back but also a good stand off

( another record from that year and still stands today is 13 games won on the bounce ) fantastic record that won't be beaten anytime soon and in a much stronger Super league them days

Yep I was around alright, my point was that he I seem to remember he always seemed to cop a fair bit stick at times particularly later in his career.

I thought he was a cracking player and probably the best home grown talent the club has ever produced. Even though we knew what a player he was I'm not sure we knew just how good until he retired when he wasn't there anymore.

If he'd have been in a St's, Wigan or Leeds side he'd have been up there with the very best of SL.

Funnily enough he made his debut at full back against Leeds in 1999. Only played there a couple of times though I think.

The gasp at Wembley when James Graham floored him.
