The problem for Litten was similar to Hodgson in that he needed to play regular rugby at a high level but Houghton was an 80min player.

Sometimes you just have to move to advance and develop, hopefully he will become a very good SL player. He never let us down when called upon but was always going to be behind Houghton.

Still think he needs a coupe of years to develop fully and playing regularly for Rovers will help.

Focusing on developing a core of home grown players to help win sustained success in SL (because that is what Saints do), is like focusing on what designer fragrance a Hollywood idol wears in the belief it will make you as attractive as them.

(I’m feeling provocative today).

I think he's improved a lot now he's a regular. His defence was and still is his weakness. I'm surprised how slight he still is. He's explosive from dummy half when the forwards get a roll on. The six again rule suits his style.

As mentioned we offered him a contract but Rovers obviously made him a better offer. That's the salary cap.

What's the alternative? Bring expensive mercenaries in like Warrington?

He wasn’t going to oust Houghton in a Radford team. Fair play to him for making a great career move for game time, but I’d still say Johnstone is the more well rounded hooker.

If you have enough money it doesn’t have to be a choice.

Developing players or wearing the nice fragrance probably helps a bit... even if it maybe costs more than it is worth.

I just feel that the importance to winning tends to be greatly overstated compared with other factors, and the excitement around potential/fear of losing out on it often isn’t sensible. In my head it is filed under JamesGreenPropsDon’tReachTheirPeakUntilTheyAre28Fallacy.
