That was against Huyton just after we had signed Clarkey from New Hunslet and Bill Ramsey had arrived from Bradford! There was a place at the bottom of that terrace in Carrington Street behind the St Johns hut with the wheels on it, where you could actually get in over the barbed wire!! By heck they were tough timesthough !!
983 there and so was I. The previous all time low was 1,243 against Dewsbury in 1971 which I missed because I had Mumps! So the game you mention certainly was a low point! The introduction of speedway in 1972 probably saved us from going out of existance back then, the Vikings could get gates of 4-5 thousand people in and they paid us around £4,000 a year!
