Aside from 2 domestic options who don't seem attainable (Rowley & Wane) Cartwright is the best option, he's got the coaching experience we need and has been in and around successful winning environments for a long time, we need someone to bring in a winning culture and mentality. Like a lot of oversees coaches it could go either way.

I really enjoy long walks especially when they are taken by people I don't like!

Exactly this for me as I don't honestly think there is anyone else in the British game currently other than the two names you mention that would be good/suitable appointments.

Whos to say he’s not just a yes man like Stanley Gene who everyone wanted rid of. Time will tell if it’s the right appointment but the fact he’s not had a head coaches role in over ten years worries me.

Rowley is the third oldest HC in SL, iirc, and hardly some new kid on the coaching block.

This.

Pretty much all the candidates we've been linked to are experienced people. Lam, Rowley, McDermott and now Cartwright. The anomaly was Briers

Comparing Cartwright to Gene?
Cartwright played plenty of Origin and Test matches for Australia. Played with nutters like Mark Geyer and Ian Roberts in a winning Grand Final team. Worked alongside Sheens and Gould, Ricky Stuart, Paul Green and Kevvie Walters.
Tough, straight talking no nonsense, own man, apparently.
I think his involvement in rugby league has been a little more stellar than Stanleys, with respect.

Cartwright has played and coached at the very highest level, not even on the same planet as Gene.

"You have failed me for the last time!" - Darth Vader

Plenty of experience looking at Wiki. Integrity too, reading the paragraph about Turner. More positives than negatives. We won't know if whoever is appointed will be be successful or not so everyone is a gamble.

"After he finally retired as a player, John Cartwright became an assistant coach at the Penrith club and the Sydney Roosters. In 2000 he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to Australia's international standing in rugby league. [citation needed]

Cartwright began coaching at Penrith as the reserve coach in 2001. After a period as assistant to Ricky Stuart at the Sydney Roosters, as well as coaching the United States national rugby league team against the Kangaroos in 2004,[5] Cartwright was appointed the inaugural coach of the Gold Coast Titans after their admission to the National Rugby League.

He became involved in a feud with Melbourne Storm winger Steve Turner over contractual obligations. "We flew him up, showed him around for two or three days and he agreed to me that he would come here, we shook hands. He looked me in the eye. The deal was done. He even started looking for accommodation. I only coached him in a couple of games at Penrith and my reaction has been the same as it would be for any player in this situation. But to do what he has done . . . I'm not happy. I'm extremely disappointed, to say the least." [6]

In 2009, he was selected to coach the NSW Country Origin side. He later guided to the Gold Coast to consecutive finals appearances in the 2009 NRL season and the 2010 NRL season, the latter of which saw the Gold Coast reach the preliminary final. In 2011, the Gold Coast claimed their first Wooden Spoon under Cartwright's coaching.[7]

After four years without making the finals, on 5 August 2014 he announced that he would stand down as head coach of the Gold Coast, with immediate effect. He would coach the club one last time against the Sydney Roosters in Round 22 before Neil Henry taking over on an interim basis.[8]

In February 2015, Cartwright joined the North Queensland Cowboys as an assistant to head coach Paul Green.

On 4 October 2015, John Cartwright was a member of North Queensland's coaching staff in the side's 17-16 Grand Final victory over the Brisbane Broncos.

In the weeks following the Grand Final win, Cartwright quit the North Queensland club and returned to Sydney as an assistant coach of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.[9]

Following the 2020 NRL season, Cartwright was announced as an assistant coach for the Brisbane Broncos, working under their new head coach Kevin Walters."

Not sure where the "young English coach" thing has come from. I don't believe I have seen anything saying as such. In fact when AP did his interview after sacking Smith he was purposely vague on that saying it could be a domestic appointment but it could be an overseas appointment. HDM have repeatedly said that they believe Hull's preference is "for a British coach, or at least one who knows the ins and outs of the Super League competition" but there's never been any mention of it being a young coach as far as I am aware.

And the key word there is preference. That's not a fixed thing. They'll be adapting based on the candidates that present themselves. In fact this is the most recent quote from Myler:

Our head coach appointment needs to be the right fit for what we want to do over this next period of time, and this person has to buy into what we want to achieve. The names of the people that we have been linked to are very experienced coaches; they will add elements to us, and that person coming in here will be vital to the vision that we go forward with. Those conversations need to be thought through to make sure we get the right guy.

Apart from saying we're being linked with experienced coaches, Myler is not indicating anything there about where the coach will come from. Personally, I'm more bothered about, as Myler says here, them being the right fit and the right guy.

Is that Cartwright? Spoken previously about not knowing much about him. Biggest con for me on the surface is that he hasn't been a head coach for about a decade. But pro's are that he seems to have been regularly employed since then as an assistant in good successful setups so will have kept up with the day to day elements needed for coaching. If he had been out of the game for awhile or involved in a higher up capacity such as being a DOR, I'd be more concerned.
