Community department. : Wed Dec 16, 2009 12:25 pm
http://www.wakefieldwildcats.co.uk/lear ... 06427.html

for all the disagreements supporters have over the running of the club, one area which can not be touched with criticism is the community department efforts. This is a wonderful article and very positive.

Personally I wouldn’t fancy swimming the length of the English Channel let alone in boxing gloves so to be inspired to take up such a feat is testament to the good work Paul Broadbent and the learning zone put it.

Swimming in boxing gloves jesus, if your good at swimming and doing it collectively then its an achievable target, but speaking as someone who used to be a half decent swimmer there gonna find it almost impossible to swim using them and going to expand so much energy just trying to keep themselves afloat.

Good luck lads.

Yes, nice article. Those boys must have been REALLY impressed by the club to take on that challenge

Great to see the clubmaking such a positive impact and inspiring these young lads to take up such a challenge. Full credit to the lads too, plenty of 15/16 year olds wouldnt have even turned up to the learning zone

speaking as someone absolutely poop at swimming i would find it hard to swim a width (nevermind a length) in boxing gloves

Surely they will have a minutes silence to Eddie Wearing before they start, have Stuart Hall on the tannoy, Princess Ann watching from the balcony and lads from Barnsley throwing sharks into the water to make it difficult for them!!!!

It'll be knock out

As I am the person that is working with these young men I feel moved to say a couple of things.
Firstly I agree wholeheartedly that the Community/Learning Zone department at Wakefield is outstanding. Both Mark Winder and Davide Longo are a tremendous assett to the club.

Of course I am aware that the challange the boys have set themselves is a difficult one - it is intended to be. I am hoping that in doing this the boys will have to find some mental and physical strength, things that they may not realise that they have - it is as much about developing them as individuals as it is about the fundraising to be honest.

With regards to the fundraising the boys have set themselves a target of reaching £500, however, perhaps the thing I find most uplifting is the fact that a certain Mr Adam Watene's memory can motivate a bunch of non RL scallywags from Sheffield to do something like this. Whilst at the club the boys learned of his passing and were told about the kind of man he was, the player he was and the way he conducted his life - after hearing this they all wanted to do something out of respect for a man they never met, that would also help his family.

A little nearer the time of the event I will be back on the board hoping to get some sponsorship from one or two of you that not only want to contribute to the AW fund but also want to encourage my boys in doing something noble and productive.

On behalf of the lads i would like to say many thanks for your supportive comments.
