I think you’ve inadvertently highlighted the problem these days with imports.

He probably is very handy and would do well. However the Newtown Jets are no bush team. He will be on a fair wedge there. I know it’s not full time money but it won’t be bad. Add that to a lower cost of living and a weak pound and the U.K. becomes less tempting.

He won’t come here for peanuts or to fulfil his ambition, he will want big money, far more than he’d ever get in Oz.

It’s not that we couldn’t afford him or tempt him but you have to ask a very honest question.

Is this lower grade Australian worth the same money or more that we payed Arona or even more pertinent what we likely pay Ashurst. Are we going to pay big money for a gem or are we paying big money for mediocrity?

That’s my dilemma and has been in recent years, is this lad really better than what we could find and nurture in the U.K.

I know it was just one game but there was nothing from that Wakeman that suggested to me he was any better than Morgan Smith.

Just how I see it, but I think these days good overseas players are thin pickings if I’m honest. I think we were hugely lucky with Whitebread who’s ambition thankfully matched his obvious physical prowess.

Tricky these days.

I agree with a lot of that and it makes sense but on todays showing he’s been almost equal to a NZ pack so I do think he is probably better than what we can find over here in the uk. It might not hurt to have some conversations though to see if it’s an option.

So far I’ve seen Kalanche and Nakubawaii have good games as props who are certainly worth a look.

Agree about Wakeham. I felt that Smith could probably offer similar to him at this stage. I’m also quietly optimistic about the Smith signing. Looks to have a real good short kicking game which we’ve always lacked.

As for Arona, he was looking good end of 2022. I would be ok with another year if he feels up for it.

Rumours on the Wigan fans boards that Patrick Mago maybe heading your way.
Anything on this from your end?

Not heard anything so appears to be coming from Wigan fans.

He looks a handful and a strong runner but I’ve only seen him twice. Has he been good for Wigan this year?

Can only think Wigan have their eye on another quota player if true.

Mago and Kalanche/Nakubawaii should sort out props. Seriously though at least there appears to be a fair few prop options emerging from this World Cup.

Mago would provide the bums on seats fan favourite type impact that we had with Fafita. Seems durable too doesn’t miss many games, however doesn’t play big minutes.

He’s pretty much the definition of an impact forward who is rarely put to ground and has a good offload.

Strong rumours that Wigan are trying to make s move for Luke Thompson and I’m thinking the only way they let Mago go is if they have him or another replacement lined up for him.

Well if we are looking to pick up a couple from the World Cup it’s been pretty slim pickings so far.

I’d say Nakubawaii showed up well for Fiji yesterday and would be a good pick up for us.

Didn’t really see much from Wakeham to be fair to excite.

Watching AJ Wallace for Jamaica today. Maybe some potential there but not sure he’d be better than Windrow. As the games going on though he looks to be putting in some good tackles and decent runs. Could be worth a look at.

Not sure so far there’s many hidden gems but there’s plenty of games to go yet I guess.

I thought the same about Wakeham, but he did have a couple of good moments I thought. He was up against Cameron Munster however, at the top of his game.

I am quietly confident that Smith will go well for us, though I wouldn't be surprised if we are looking to bring in another pivot, if not for the start of the season, maybe midway through the season

Weren't we linked to one of the Burgess brothers under the Chessie era, but they weren't very complimentary about us.

Wouldn’t be a punt though. Despite not truly hitting his potential imo he’d still command good money in SL. He’s proved a risky signing in recent years, for what he’d cost versus what he’d bring he’s a big investment not a punt.

Shame as he can clearly do it when he wants but I feel we need players who are if not as good at least more reliable.

Can’t see it myself but who knows.
