Re: What we currently look like for 2023 : Wed Oct 12, 2022 2:25 pm
I think it’s really wise of Trinity to hold back and see what gems are unearthed in the World Cup. They could save a lot of money by going for the less well known players from down under looking to make a name for themselves and carve out a full time RL career.

This article is a really interesting read about the Fiji squad although it goes into depth on the other squads aswell….

Just had a look at one of their part time starting props joseph ratuvakacereivalu who looks impressive although I appeciate highlight reels can be deceptive…

Looks quite good on the YouTube clips, and very difficult to put down

Would there be a shirt wide enough to fit his name on

Think that was 3 years ago from 2019. Seems he’s not made his NRL debut.

Certainly doesn’t hurt to consider options.

Let’s sign Taupau and this guy or Lisone and I’ll be happy lol.

Seriously though, There’s still some good players about that’s for sure and seems some World Cup players who may be worth a punt:

The teams most likely to cough up gems are Fiji and PNG.

However we have to tread carefully.

If the players in question play in the Australian/NZ comp but not at NRL level I’m fine with it.

Those pulled from the domestic comps in both countries we need to be very wary of. These comps are little more than Sunday league in many ways and that’s important imo.

They may be good athletes and decent players but they will have zero experience of playing in a pro or even semi pro environment.

I think we are that busy putting SL down that we forget it’s one of only two full time RL comps in the world. It’s not as good as the NRL or as rich but it’s still big time in RL terms. It’s a huge step up for any player, even those from the Championship.

It’s not that most wouldn’t adapt but it’s how long. It takes time to adapt and that tends not to be what we want in SL. There is a reason why players from these two nations aren’t as prevalent in the NRL as you’d might expect, and we don’t want expensive flops.

Just because you shine in a few games in a knock out competition doesn’t necessarily mean you are suitable for a full time career, just doesn’t work that way.

So not against it but what shines isn’t always gold and I’m confident our coaches won’t be fooled but some fans will. When we don’t sign the obvious one there will be a reason imho.

That went well. No sooner you mention ratuvakacereivalu and he’s injured and retiring from the World Cup! Looks like he won’t play in it afterall.

Currently, I'd have him over Lyne.

Although I only mentioned this as his squad position rather than a half, with there probably another half coming in.

Do you know our retained list or is your mate the new coach still negotiating.

I am sorry but you cannot say Croft is the answer based on a few end of season games however if your assumption of forwards then he will have to be. The glaringly obvious problem is yes we have what appears strength in the backs but sadly five of them are wingers (sort of in the case of Lineham). We appear to consider Gaskell for cover along the entire back line, full back and stand off despite his problems with injuries. If we take Gaskell out we have two halves, one full back and three recognised centres, not a lot of strength in depth.
I guess we are going for a small relatively inexperienced but jack of all trades squad and hoping for no big injury list in the backs.
