That was in the 'supposed' amateur days though.
The ground capacity was only 3000 ish. Was never going to be a big professional club without a better stadium (hmmm, that sounds familiar)

They had some great players but never competed with the top clubs.

They pulled out of the planned Queens Drive project not long before their collapse. Maybe that could have helped save them?

When Wakefield were in their 'pomp' in the 70's there were no leagues, matches were arranged between clubsand as such were what we would call 'friendlies'.
In later years were they in any of the leagues that appeared, particularly after the open professionalisation of the game?

So from a stadium point of view, it does show the need for professional facilities in a professional game.
But RU near us is not at the level to be able to rent our stadium.

There is a limit to what we can do as more than one team is going to cross over fixtures with each other.

Thats what i was on about, we are talking about just before when RU went professional, mid 1990s,Wakefield RU was no more not long afterwards, although getting kicked out of College Grove didn't help at the time.

Can anyone explain why it is necessary to water the pitch at half time when it is raining for half of the match? I ask because these days water is not cheap.

Because currently our performances are akin to watching paint dry, a Bellagio hotel style fountain halftime show will hopefully help improve our moods.

I know I'm being pedantic but you said best in country first. 30 years ago they were best team in Yorkshire, but they were still second division in the 90s.
Hard to say prior to that as you say there was no league but they weren't going to Bath or Bristol and winning.

I went a few times and enjoyed watching, but ultimately, facilities were no better than a local amateur side. That and investment was their downfall. Not their rugby.
I'd have happily seen Barley or Harrison down at Belle Vue.
I played against Barley when he was Sandal Vets. Still good.

If I was a cynic like some others on here, I would have said it’s to wash away the blood and skin from players knees,
But yes it does seem strange, but there’s probably a simple answer, however, I haven’t yet heard any complaints from the two Academy team who played there yesterday

I haven't heard anything about the child abuse on show having all those kids playing on the death pitch before the game. It was like a scene from Saw III

Wakefield RU was a mirror image of Wakefield RL , no investment no facilities to speak off. Even in the days of so called amateur period money talked and Wakefield RU could just not compete.
Sounds very familiar doesn't it.

Suppose you could add the Cricket club as well.
