It's all about Carter's club and his total lack of any kind of RL management
Why would players want to stay when Carter's doom and gloom surrounded the club like a life sucking fog for years now. It also rubs off on the players, managers and supporters. The responsibility for the stink around the place.

So they have new money, but decide to buy a player who isn't actually a regular in the bottom of the league side, and a centre in his testimonial year. That's not really aiming high.

Last has said his main priority is to get the average age of the squad down so I'd take the Lynn rumour with a pinch of salt. Maybe Crowther isn't necessarily aiming high, just higher.
