Ive been working at Outwood Grange for the last six months and have got to know Mr Barker very well, those who attended OGA probably remember him as he's been a PE teacher there for 33 years.

We've had a couple of conversations about how sport has changed over the last 30+ years and it is he who has told me how Rugby League was never a priority at the school, that it was always soccer until the last ten years or so.

With the opening of a new £3M sports hall to add to the already very good amenities and the promise of more new facilities in the near future the school is going to produce some very good sportsmen and women for decades to come.

Snapethorpe Secondary produced many players when in existence.
My father taught there and along with ex Ref and teacher Gwyn Davies brought through many players such as Harold Poynton and Ian Brooke. If I remember correctly.
The Fox brothers went to Sharlston School.
I think it was a through school to the age of 15 then.
Sharlston Junior school went on to introduce many lads to the game,such as ex pro Martyn Pearson and present amateur with Sharlston Rovers Gareth Davies.

Lol I remember Mr Barker, wasn't a fan of his tbh.

I was at OGS 20 years ago and RL wasn't a priority at all. We played a few matches managed by a History teacher called mr hannon (from down south btw) and don't remember ever training. We had a few lads that knew how to play but the players certainly weren't produced by the school

quite a lot of the outwood lads could be traced back to newton hill junior school, but more accurately stanley rangers. schools don't generally produce kids, but they do allow them to get more coaching/training/game time alongside their club activities.

Lockwood Brothers (Lupset)
Larkins (Flanshaw)
Fred Bradley (Broadway)
George Northen (lupset)
and the Mc'Dermots originated from Lindsay Ave, Brian Snr;went to English Marter's
And when the old grey matter kicks in i will name plenty morel

The McDermotts spent the majority of their years on Townley Rd, on the junction with Waterton Rd, living in two houses knocked into one to accommodate all of them. They all attended English Martyrs before going on to St Austins when the family moved to College Grove. They all then attended St Thomas a Becketts with exception of Patrick who had all the brains and went to QEGS.

Another Rugby League playing family off Lupset were the Dickens, Stuart playing at Featherstone and his dad Steve had a spell with Salford, apart from these two there are a number of others who played amateur for Westgate.

Close relatives of the McDermotts were the McGowans, Mick (dad) was a superb coach who was ahead of his time. He spent a number of years coaching at Wakefield Colts level before being assistant to Peter Fox for many years. His son, Andrew, was a very good player who turned professional with Wakefield (another Beckets lad). His carrer outside Rugby was all that prevented him becoming a superb pro for many years, he became a Head Chef at Wembley Arena.
