Do they? Maybe you don't see what I see as a fan, but I can't really remember us ever signing a player who every fan liked, it's part and parcel of being a supporter. I remember people saying we should have gone for Darren Bent over Torres. I don't think you've seen me rave over any of our recent signings, largely because nothing has inspired me but today's signing seems to make a lot of sense for Rodgers. Like Rafa when he brought Alonso with him (not comparing them as players but as signings), if Allen is seen as pivotal to the style/a key player to get things going, then investing a little bit extra for a player like that clearly makes sense for a new manager.

I never watched much of Swansea or 'Team GB', so I can't testify to know an awful lot about him. My mates (United fans) say he's a good player who's good at passing, that's about as good as it gets for me.

Massive attention all the time v fleeting attention every four years.
The most popular sport in the country by 100 miles v events that are ignored most of the time.

People seem to focus on the tens of thousands of pounds that footballers earn every week and compare that to athletes who are supposedly doing it for the love of it. A friendly interview at the high point of an athletes career v the worst incidents that are being reported about footballers.

How about comparing the tax paid by pro footballers with the £9bn+ that the people of GB will be paying for for decades?

IMO next season will be a difficult season for football simply because most of the players will be suffering from fatigue because a lot of the players will be overworked because of Euro 2012. But football needing feel good stories because the country is caught up in temporary Olympic fever? Give me a break.

Footballers aren't overworked though are they really?. Train for what 3 hours a day..play two maybe times a week.

People are now starting to question whether they are really worth their wages at the highest level (like they do with people in high paid industry jobs),also they have no respect to officials and won nothing internationally since 1966.

Joe Allen for £15 million...Superb. That's the type of signing that will keep you out of the champions league. Not a bad little player to be fair but probably worth about £3 million. £15 million....awesome.

He's very similar to Lucas in the fact that he's very neat, great passer short and long, and can dictate the tempo of games. Like Rodgers said you'd think he was Spanish the way his game is.

Me too, but I meant from a wider public perspective, for the first half of the season at least the Premier League as a whole and the clubs individually needs to market the bollox off their charity work. Bring back the segments on MOTD showing what players do, amongst other things.

But would the media be bothered?

It would help if footballers didnt keep shooting themselves and the game in the foot. But, partly because of the money and also because they are more famiiar and there to be shot at, football is judged by different standards to other sports.

At the start of the Olympics we had all that fuss about GB footballers not singing the national anthem. I reckon at least 50% of our gold medal winners haven't sung the anthem, and not all of them were too overcome by emotion. Has that been mentioned in the press?

The reaction to the cyclist who admitted to deliberately falling over to gain a restart was far more restrained than it would have been if a footballer had made a similar admission.

And how would the press have reacted if an English football team had been humiliated in the semi final of a tournament the way that GB's men's hockey team were?

I agree with everything you say there, especially the bit about singing the national anthem. On the same night that the footballers were hammered for not caring about the country and all that crap, Jessica Ennis wasn't singing the national anthem, I didn't see it mentioned anywhere.

I do think though that the FA and PL need to remind people why football is the number one game in the country, after the disappointment of the Euros and the impact of the Olympics it could affect football this season.

I think people should get off football's back, especially politicians and the mainstream media who do a lot more to damage society than professional footballers do. It's an easy option. How does John Terry's actions compare with, say, cutting back on mental health spending? I know which one is the easier to resolve and has less impact on the UK than the other.
