If they had called the game off, the violence would have escalated tenfold because 25,000 people would have been roaming the streets rather than in the relative safety of the seats. It's one thing having thousands of Millwall fans where you can see them all but having them out of sight is far, far worse. If the police had done what you had said, I'm sure we'd have been talking of many more stabbings.
I've seen Millwall fans in action and it's not pretty. There is a big element of West Ham fans who need no encouragement either.
As soon as I saw the draw, having heard of the hatred between the two sets of fans when I was at Upton Park some years ago, I fancied it was all going to be a bit tasty. Whether the police underestimated the level it was going to be on, I don't know.
