Probably because Smalling is seen as a future player in the England set up and to be fair from what i've seen of him so far in a red shirt he looks to have all the atributes to make a name for himself at the top level.

Sunderland have been far the better team today, Welbeck and Gyan have torn them apart so far. Chelsea need to step it up in these last 30 minutes to get anything out of this game
