When he didn't have the security of being surrounded by top players - i.e. when he was at Sunderland - he looked a below average centre-half.
United fans I know were saying similar things about Phil Bardsley and Gibson not so long ago.
TBF though, he is much better than Bardsley.
He definitely has a future at United, and with the greatest respects to Sunderland, he will be surrounded by top players at United. He has done pretty well when he's played for NI as well. He has covered for Rio/Vidic better than anyone could've expected this season.
Nothing special, but a very solid and decent CB.
