For me after seeing that friendly against Mexico, my team for the first game would be :

1. Green

2. Johnson
5. Ferdinand
6. Terry
3. Cole

7. Lennon (raw pace is what we need to get at defenders)
4. Barry (Milner if Barry doesn't make it)
8. Lampard
11. Gerrard

9. Crouch (international record speaks for itself)
10. Rooney

No way!

Milner and lampard the central midfielders? We'll get passed apart without a holding midfielder, and neither one of them are it.

James in goal instead of green. He's a better goal keeper and really doesn't have many brainfarts anymore.

Johnson isn't a good enough defender. Your defenders need to be rock solid, even the wing backs. They will be constantly tested.

Crouch is a free kick machine and doesn't score against the top nations.

I've said before England should play 4-5-1 with Gerrard or Lampard linking up with Rooney.

I wish everyone would read bramleyrhino's post two or three times just to get it through some thick skulls

Mr bramleyrhino speaks a lot of sense.

Then again, chance are he'll be keeping his kit on.

We're on the same wavelength.

That would also allow for a defensive midfielder to protect the back four and we'd still have the wide players to give us width.

The trouble is I don't think Capello is a fan of the system so I doubt we will use it.

The dilemna for Capello is whether to ditch a system that worked very well in qualifying (in what turned out to be quite a poor group) and will probably be perfectly adequate in the Group stage, but will struggle against the stronger teams, in favour of one that is largely untested. A switch to 4-5-1 would be a gamble but one that will indicate the extent of his ambitions.

Id agree with that too, both Lampard & Gerrard have goals in them. France won a world cup without a recognised striker(who if i recall couldn't lace Rooney's boots)so try and play to your strenghs,if it doesn't work well bring Heskey or Crouch off the bench and adjust the system to 4-4-2

Bet the likes of Brazil,Spain,Germany etc are having a good laugh after that performance today

I know it is better to get the bad performance's out of the way before the world cup starts but realistically we will struggle to get past the last 16,i hope Adam Johnson gets in along with Joe Cole,i wouldn't bank on Walcott sending any decent crosses in,& how bad is his first touch?

Spain barely got past Saudi Arabia yesterday. Writing them off are you? It's a warmup game, Capello tried some stuff and we got away with a win. Doesn't mean a thing in the long run

I thought winning games while not playing well was the sign of a good team :D Anyway i'll settle for 7 scrappy wins in SA if it means we win the tournament.
