I was impressed with that one. I thought "hence" was better.

I'm asking the question honestly. Didn't he want to sign Barry then Xabi seen his a'rse? Or was it a case of Alonso wanting to return to Spain?

A bit of both. Rafa wanted to get rid as he felt the time was right to get rid, Xabi then shown him he was wrong and wanted to go back to Spain to be part of the new Galactico era at Madrid. Probably the biggest mistake in Rafa's time at Liverpool, although it probably wouldn't have hurt as much if he was given the £30m to put straight back into the squad.

I never noticed how important he was until he left. Gerrard playing in the advanced midfield role isn't effect without Alonso giving him great early ball. I watch him at Madrid and his ability with both feet is astounding.
