But don't you get it? Liverpool and United were willing to pay £15m/£18m/whatever for Young, despite his contract situation. Young evidently wanted to leave, it's been obvious since January when he wanted to go to Liverpool, but Villa stood firmly in his way. Thing is, neither club stopped and thought "we can have him in 12 months time for £0. maybe we should force Villa into a corner where they have to drop their bid." Instead, we seen two clubs happily offer a bloated price despite the position of power being in the clubs' hands.
When Ozil went to Madrid, there were rumours linking Ozil everywhere but he obviously had his sights set on Madrid. United were strongly linked; however, Madrid forced Werder into a corner and got their man for much cheaper. There was no doubting Ozil's ability and his reputation was at a career-high, the difference is, Madrid treated the transfer the way it should have been treated, whereas this Young transfer seems to have been treated as though he's under a long term contract.
It's not the only deal though, look at Charlie Adam. Somehow, in six months, his value has actually risen, when, in reality, it should be dropping because he can be had for £0. in twelve months time, yet we will probably pay close to £10m for him, when we should be paying about £4m for him.
If Adam is still being chased by 2 or 3 clubs in a year's time and his value doesnt decline due to injury or loss of form, wont he cost just as much? The only difference being that the money would go to him in wages rather than to Blackpool as a transfer fee? His value (ie transfer fee + wages) to the buying club shouldnt change.

Why would you bring wages into a debate purely talking of transfer fees? The point about Adam is simple, his contract has wound down, which means the bargaining position of Blackpool is weakened, yet somehow clubs may actually pay more. The wage is irrelevant when I'm talking about the bargaining position of clubs over transfer fees.

You cant talke purely in terms of transfer fees. The cost to the buying club is the transfer fee + his wages. One possible reason why Adam's value has risen in the last 6 months could be that he has reduced his wage demands following Blackpool's relegation. If the fee is depressed because a player is on a short short contract then logically clubs will be willing to pay more in wages to trump rival bidders. Assuming a player is wanted by a number of clubs, as Adam appears to be.
How much is Joe Cole's contract, relative to other Liverpool players and what it would have been if he'd been signed a year earlier?
Barça confident of getting Sánchez now as City have turned their attention to Hulk. Mata not keen on a move away from La Liga with Barcelona still interested. New Madrid signing Hamit Altintop will be out for four months with a back injury. Keep an eye on Malaga next season. Joaquín, Monreal, Mathijsen, Sergio Sánchez, Toulalan and Van Nistelrooy for €30 million. The new owners reckon there's still money in the pot for Pelligrini too.
He's obviously seen how much Liverpool are willing to overpay for players Lee.
I am just gobsmacked Mark. You have a great deal in getting Young for £16-17M, but yet there is not a chance on this planet that Downing is worth more.
I think Kenny needs to re-think about this supposed transfer policy of buying young domestic players, because every time he sees a target, he is going to get priced out. Plus aswell, as you said earlier, it doesn't help buying playing for ridiculous amounts. Carroll was not worth £35m. It's good that he's looking to the future, but if he is going to be paying over the odds for it, he may aswell look elsewhere.
If he's interested in Downing, then fair enough. I don't rate him myself, but I just hope he tries to get Villa to reduce the price rather than just saying "yeah, we'll pay whatever you want us to pay".
I'm sorry but Stuart Downing is not worth more than Ashley Young.
£19M? You're having a f*****g laugh, Lerner.......
I can't stress enough how frustrated I am to see us overspend. I was of the belief we'd be sensible in the market, or we'd at least sign top players with re-sale value. We could spend close to £30m on Adam and Downing. This is reminiscent of Hughes at City, signing homegrown players for inflated fees because we can.
