Now, I'm sorry, but if a Portuguese club can achieve those kinds of profits in the market, WTF are English clubs playing at? People claim our talent isn't overpriced or even overrated, but just look abroad at clubs like Porto and Udinese for a good example of running a business. You look at their team now, and they have £50m worth of talent in Hulk and Falcao, then you see their defence and that's worth a fair amount, they are an immense club, and they're even making profit from non-playing staff now.

Porto are in a strong financial position because there are clubs out there prepared to pay over the odds for its players.

If English (and to a lesser degree Spanish and Italian) clubs retreated away from the transfer market and Fantasy Football squad-building, some of the smaller European leagues who rely on transfer income to survive would be in real trouble IMO.

There is no criteria. Everybody has a differing opinion on every player and always will have.

That is the beauty of debate, there is often not a right and wrong, just opinions!

So let me get this right. Chelsea are paying around £13 million for a manager with around a years experience?

Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union.

It is a vicious circle. There are values for the PL/La Liga, then Italy, then Germany and so-on and so forth. Do you think if Porto would have been looking at Sanchez instead of Barcelona, he would be going there for £30 million? It is the football food chain.

PS

I would speculate Anderson didn't struggle with a work permit due to him being employed in a EU country.

He got it via an appeal, for being an 'outstanding young talent', IIRC.

Of course it's the food chain, but not enough clubs try to step out of the circle. It seems to be accepted that English clubs will overspend, they will bring in talentless dross (Poulsen, Zigic) and the smaller clubs around Europe will get the players for dirt cheap. Arsene Wenger is trying/has tried to do it, but hasn't struck the balance correctly between business and competing. Too many clubs bring in a manager and go with what he wants to do, this is where a DOF comes in to place, as a club should have a vision/strategy/plan of how the club will work in the transfer market. If you keep a DOF in charge, no matter who comes in as manager, the club will continue to be stable by sticking to the plan. This also halves the load on a manager, so he can focus on what he should be doing, coaching the players. And I don't buy into the method of "How can a manager manage a team when he isn't signing the players?" If the relationship between DOF and manager is good, they should be able to work out targets and needs between them, yet people seem to believe it the role of the manager. IMO, the DOF will gradually become more successful in England, the clubs won't be able to sustain the spending and they'll eventually try to replicate others around Europe.

That's unkind to talentless dross, Poulsen hasn't been that good

Why would clubs like City/Chelsea step out of the circle when they have the cash to waste? I agree with the point you're making, with Everton's financial situation I would, but clubs with shed loads of money will just continue to overspend to buy the players they want.

Some footballers do have to be seen live to be fully appreciated. Colin Bell being the classic example. You just don't see their movement off the ball as well on telly.

great player and it's true you DO appreciate a player more when you see him 'live' in any sport - you mentioned Bell but I think the most impressive display of off the ball play was by the late great Peter Osgood - it was unbelievable to watch the sheer hard work he got through with the little lay offs, nod downs & taking players away from the defence for others to expolit etc And I say that as a Spurs fan FFS ! there were many similar type players of that era ie Gilzean,Mick Jones,Sniffer Clarke & Brain Kidd etc.
