He had been set to sign for us since January. The day after news leaked about him failing his medical, he signs for Newcastle. It's a coup for them as he's apparently a talented player, but we'll see how sensible it is during the next five years.

Yeah I know all that, I just can't see how a player can supposedly fail a medical and 1 club and then get offered a 5 year contract at another - I know Newcastle are a bit incompetent but that seems like its perhaps Liverpool were offering a short term contract to see if he could stay fit and Newcastle was the more secure, long term option?

Demba Ba failed a medical for Stoke (I think) in January, then signed for West Ham not long after. Aly Cissokho apparently failed a medical at Milan when he was a Porto player, something to do with his teeth, apparently, but then proceeded to sign for Lyon and he's been fine.

He failed his medical due to a groin injury that stopped him from signing for us in January, I'm personally guessing that, after his failed medical, we've offered him a lower deal (possibly rising if he proves his fitness) but Newcastle didn't. The turnaround has been so dramatic, it shows obvious desperation on his side and possibly Newcastle's, too. Hopefully it works out for them, then again, I'd hate to wish Ashley good fortune so I hope they get sold soon enough.

I sort of get your point, Mancini is a fan of big players, especially in midfield. I remember Liverpool beating Inter, and he turned up with Julio Cruz and Ibra up front. Baffling. However, Modric is an energetic player who can play deeper in midfield, you know, like, if you have a strong destroyer next to him, he'll get on just fine. I could imagine a de Jong, Toure and Modric midfield, you get just about everything with that, whilst Silva is perfectly capable of playing anywhere further up the field.

Besides, City don't sign players to create the perfect XI. It's obvious Mancini likes to change things around to suit the game, we've seen 4-4-2's, 4-5-1's, sometimes a formation that acts like a 4-6-0 (when he plays Tevez up front, who generally drops deep/doesn't play as a conventional striker. If having Modric means he can add creative ability that is also versatile, I can see why he's keen to add him; he's far superior to Barry.

I don't doubt it could work, City's midfield needs a player like Modric as it's too samey at the moment. I just think Mancini fancies the bigger stronger players in midfield and does not like to be too open. They could easily play together but it does not seem like the sort of thing Mancini would do.

Anyway if he goes anywhere it looks like being Chelsea after his statement yesterday.

I see Marouanne Fellaini has issued a 'come get me' plea today. It will be interesting to see who comes a knocking. Harry Redknapp will have no doubt already put a bid in and Newcastle can rarely resist a player that has been looked at by Moyes.

Harry won't make a move until someone else has already made a bid.

Do you know what the story is with Granada? Went to see them in January 09 and they were fighting off relegation from 2B, the players were protesting about not being paid and there were about 500 people in the ground.

Now back to back promotions and they're in La Primera.

Maybe you brought them some luck as they finished around mid-table that season.

I know when Cuidad de Murcia relocated to Granada there were some very unhappy Granainos. I used to work in a nursery in Murcia and one of the Ciudad players had a kid there. He told me that the president had called the players to a meeting one day after training and told them the news. The main reason was the preferential treatment that Real Murcia got when it came to funds, decisions and support from local government. I remember the player telling me that upping sticks and moving to Granada was suicide but the majority of the players were going to do it as it was their only source of income. That proved to be quite ironic as not so long after the club dropped out of the league owing over €1,000,000 to players.

Granada signed an agreement with Udinese a couple of years ago and they've still got loads of players on loan from the Italians. One thing that was mentioned on televsion last night was just that, the number of players they've got on loan. I think one of the pundits said it was something like half the squad! The club said last week that should they go up there would be money available but they wouldn't spend beyond their means (I read that as 'we're brassick').

Last I heard about Granada 74 (Ciudad de Murcia) is that they were playing in the Andalusian league being managed by the club president.
