He's not.

Baines, Evra et al are top players in that position.

Clichy isn't bad, but he's not as good as those.

Clichy would be a massive upgrade on what we have now and is still only young. I'd have him a good way below Cole and below Baines and Evra as well but that's no disgrace and he's obviously a player who can comfortably play in a team that qualifies for the top 4 this year which is our main aim. £5 million is the right opening offer, and I imagine we'll get him for £8 million or less. Rumour is that Clichy wouldn't be first choice at Arsenal anyway.

Well done to Wigan for keeping him but to turn down a club the size of Villa is madness. It was a miracle they stayed up last season but they will go this time. Especially if N'Zogbia leaves. Martinez's stock will never be higher than it currently is IMO.

He has talked to them, so he must be basing it on what Villa have. If he's been told 'We're selling Ashley Young, you'll be given £10m to spend and we expect Europe and you're getting a 2 year contract' then it's not hard to turn it down.

Martinez didn't talk to Villa. He spoke with Whelan then said no to even an interview.

According to 5Live Benitez isn't being offered the job because he wanted £30 million to spend and Lerner wasn't prepared to give it to him plus it looks certain Young will be off and possibly a couple of others, you can see why Martinez isn't willing to give it a go. It's interesting how people get on someone's back because they show a bit of loyalty to a club that have been loyal to him. Why jump ship just because Villa are interested? doesn't mean it's the right move, maybe he wants to give it a couple more years at Wigan and go from there. He's young manager, plenty of years to move on to other, bigger clubs.

But that £30m would have been wisely invested...
