Comparing Mata and Downing isn't really fair. Mata is a good player who can pass with either foot. Do you really rate Vidal? How long has he been at Leverkusen? I'd have thought if he was really that good he'd have gone to one of Europe's 'bigger' clubs before now.
We're talking about youngsters aren't we? Gervinho is 27 and while I have no doubt he'd be a cracking signing for Newcastle I'd be underwhelmed if he came to Old Trafford.
Vidal is a quality player, if anything playing for Leverkusen hasn't done him justice, as he's one of the best midfielders in Germany.
If you want examples of how European/Worldwide players can be cheaper, just look around Europe and see some of the best young players and look at the fee paid for players like Pastore, Alexis Sanchez and Ozil. Too many big clubs seem intent on letting smaller clubs sign big prospects, then, if they work out, they happily pay the big fee. IMO, every summer top talents come over from South America, or top players get signed at bargain fees (Hernandez at United, Tiote at Newcastle), yet people think that a couple of years in the premier league justifies a £20m fee. I just don't get these sky high evaluations of home grown talent, especially when many clubs themselves sign top talent from abroad for cheaper.
