You're right, he was sh*t. You know more than Lippi, Zidane, Blanc, Ferguson and the like. He was never a patch on "Super" Frank or Stevie G.
If I had as much time on my hands as Flipper, I could easily pull off similar quotes made about a number of other players in the last 20 or 30 years. This is the age of hyperbole. Mainly driven on by the press. This is the same press (led by United fans like Steve Curry) who try to persuade us that Rooney is as good, if not better, than Messi.
Scholes was very good in a very good team. For England he was average. Nothing more, nothing less.
In terms of English midfielders, I would rather have had Gascoigne in my team. IMO a better all-round player.
There’s a thread on Red Café in which most United fans appear to claim that Scholes is the best midfielder of his generation. I can only assume that in Rag World, players like Xavi doesn’t exist. Xavi may be the same ‘generation’ as Scholes, but he is in a different stratosphere as a player.
IMO Scholes was a very good player but not one of the best players in the last 30 years or so. Zidane, Baresi, Messi, Maradona, Xavi, Ronaldihno, (real) Ronaldo and others were simply a different quality of player. In my lifetime, no English player has got close to any of these.
