Bit late with this but what do people make of the Aston Villa penalty to tie the scores up against Everton? I didn't see it but there appears to be a lot of controversy behind it, yet my Everton supporting brother doesn't remember any injustice about it. Who is right?
IMO it was a clear pen.
Ball into the Everton box. Carew heads the ball on ever so slightly, Lescot heads the ball on again and attempts to scissor kick the ball away. But Villa attacker had already got his head to the ball, so Lescot just catches him on the side of the head.
From the very small clip I saw on SSN I think the controversy stems from it possibly being an indirect free kick from the dangerous high kick, rather than a pen for the foul. I don't agree with that at all. It wasn't just a high foot, there was actual contact between the boot and the players head and none with the ball. That means it is a foul as well so the pen is rightly given.
If there'd been no contact and the free kick had just been for a high foot then then might possibly have been a case for an indirect free kick. But IMO in any penalty box if a player goes in like that then he deserves a pen given against him and doesn't deserve the lessor punishment of an indirect.
