Re: Football Chat Thread PART II : Fri Sep 06, 2013 2:33 pm
I think it's nonsense to say the players don't care. To the vast majority of players it is an honour to play for your country.

It's nonsense to say that ITV don't care about England games. The people they have to present for England games are the same ones they have to present CL games. If you don't think they care about their CL games then you've got something wrong with your brain.

The reason their coverage is pretty poor is because they are slightly hampered because they don't have enough football coverage and the choice of suitable hosts is actually quite small - and difficult. I think Chiles is a fat brummy **** and I'd never choose to watch him, but the fact is that he is an established TV presence and he is a football fan. If you can think of someone else other than Chiles then name him. Most other people will also think he's a **** and there's little difference.

I'm 100% club football. England are a separate issue. I personally think there's too much international football and it gets in the way of club football. There's too much qualification games and too many money spinning friendlies. Tournaments are good, but the rest of it is just a waste of time.

I actually hope there is a huge fight over Dubai and the clubs kick the hell out of FIFA and massively cut down internationals.

An absolutely shocking yellow card for Welbeck tonight.
He misses a game thanks to that INCOMPETENCE!
And there is no appeal ...

The referee was giving him the benefit of the doubt. He didn't believe he could actually shoot so poorly so he thought that Welbeck was deliberately kicking the ball high in to the crowd as a result of him being called offside.

Should Welbeck have been booked for kicking the ball away? No. But should he have been booked for a crime against football with that shot- yes!

Their 'keeper should have been booked for Welbeck's first goal. Going for a walk at the back post and leaving Welbeck the empty net to walk the ball in to. Yellow card bordering on a red.

England should really kick off about that. There should be some form of common sense overruling of 'automatic' bans. His first yellow in the qualifier was when he was booked for diving and it should have been a penalty.

So he misses the Ukraine game for pretty much nothing.

One thing that tonight showed is how pathetic a player James Milner is.

Using that logic club football would be pretty rubbish, we would only have 3 clubs in existence in this country as apart from Chelsea and the Manchester clubs (and maybe the North London 2) the EPL has some very ordinary clubs.

Can't we just fire off the international fixtures now? It's like having to watch Conference football after the EPL. I'm more interested in seeing the new signings play, specifically Ozil and Lukaku at their respective teams. Watching England, even with The White Pele, just don't compare.

Football shares the same problem as Rugby League, in that its fans care more about their own domestic teams than their international side... Probably caused by the fact that those fans are lower end working class, leading to them being more 'tribal' and inward looking - Youngsters in these type of communities are brought up with a more narrow minded mindset and seem more inclined to aspire to want to play for their local 'tribe', rather than represent their larger nation.

Compare to Cricket and Rugby Union, followed and played by what people would consider a more educated and open minded class of person - Their international game is head and shoulders above their domestic game. Youngsters in those sports actually aspire to represent their countries, their domestic sides are merely a stepping stone to the international pinnacle.

If we got into the psychological nitty-gritty of all this, you'd probably find it has something to do with financial ambition - A youngster from a deprived background, at the age of 15, probably finds the idea of being paid £100k a week a lot more appealing than pulling on an international shirt?

Greg Abbott has been sacked by Carlisle Utd following their poor start to the season - 2pt in 6 games and a GD of -13

I understand that argument but for me the quality isn't there at international level. It's just not an exciting game to watch until we get to the knockout stages in a tournament. I don't prefer a domestic club to do better than England, it's about the lack of excitement in playing Moldova, San Marino etc.
