So the latest comments from Luis appear to suggest that Liverpool may win this battle, but he the war.

Suggestions are he may sign a new deal at Anfield - if true I don't think it'll be very much different to his current contract but will be more transparent with regards to exit clauses and pave his way for a move next summer.

I just hope he performs to somewhere near his best. He's got to appease the fans, his teammates, he's in a World Cup year and he's got to show the likes of Madrid that he's worth them parting with £50m for his services next summer - so hopefully that's enough to bring us another 15+ league goals this season.

It appears that United and Liverpool would be willing to sell Rooney and Suarez, just not to an English rival.

There does seem the potential for a non English club to earn a nice bit of commission brokering a sort of Newton/Higham deal. They buy the players and then sell them on to Chelsea and Arsenal at a pre agreed price.

Are there rules to prevent that in football, though? I know there's a restriction on how many clubs a player can play for within a certain period, couldn't Liverpool/Man Utd easily insert a stipulation of a minimum number of appearances/first refusal on return to England to stop it? What happened in the case with Man Utd/Tottenham/Fryers in the end?

Also, I don't really see one of Europe's big clubs willing to get involved in a shady deal like that, and as soon as Suarez/Rooney appeared interested in signing for somebody less glamorous or competitive it's not going to be hard to smell a rat.

I can totally understand why Man United wouldn't want to sell Rooney to Chelsea. But if they were to accept a 30m bid from PSG I think they would be on shaky legal ground if Chelsea then matched that bid and Rooney wanted to move to Chelsea but they refused the deal.

Why would they be on shaky legal ground? They own the player, therefore can sell to whoever they wish for whatever price is agreed. Chelsea could offer double the price of PSG, but United have no legal obligation to accept that offer, just because it's higher!

Same goes for the player though, if he wants to move to Chelsea, then he just doesn't accept the contract put in front of him from the other club, no matter what the terms and wages!

I think if Man United accept a bid from PSG to sell Rooney but refuse to allow him to go to Chelsea after they match the bid then they are risking trouble with EU employment courts, the PFA and UEFA.

IMO Man Utd's stance must always be that they want to keep Rooney. If they want him out then they will probably try and get him out of the country in a last minute deal at the end of the transfer window. But if PSG were to have a 30m bid accepted today by Man United then I think that would pretty much open the door for Rooney to move to Chelsea.

Yes, my post was tongue in cheek. I always thought the the Newton/Higham deal was tacitly agreed by Saints, they just didnt want to be seen to be selling Higham to Wigan. Whereas United have very good footballing reasons not to sell Rooney to Chelsea. Because of that I'm struggling to think of a legal reason why United could be forced to sell him to Chelsea just because they matched another club's bid.

I think Rooney could claim Man United were restricting his freedom of employment.

If Man United accepted a bid from PSG but rejected the same bid from Chelsea Rooney could claim constructive dismissal as his position at MU was now completely untenable.

I don't think Rooney will be at Chelsea this season. I think Man United will either keep him or try and ship him out on deadline day. But I think if a side like PSG were to have a bid accepted for Rooney this week I do think Chelsea would get him.

For all Man Utd's talk of not selling Rooney to us, if Chelsea were to cave and offer 50m then Man Utd would be snapping our hands off. It's mainly about not selling to a rival, but it's also about the money as well. Chelsea don't want to over pay. Man Utd don't want to risk handing the title to Chelsea. Man Utd would want to sell to Europe but there's been no movement from European clubs.

I could easily see no major movement in the transfer market. But I also think there could be a mental Rooney to Chelsea, Luiz to Barca, Fabregas to United deal come off.

Equally, I wonder if nothing is going to happen with Rooney if we don't say screw it and offer 41m for Suarez. Suarez makes a lot more sense than Eto'o and we *shouldn't* be rivals for 4th place like Arsenal are.

Potentially cracking bit of business for Hull City if the Huddlestone/Livermore move comes off. Makes a big difference to how their survival chances look IMO, along with a few decent signings they've already made. If one the strikers they've signed comes good they could do ok.
