To me he's a better all round player than Van Persie and either way is certainly better than playing 2nd fiddle for a team.

Not sure he's better than RVP but would say he is around his level but agree with you if I was Rooney I'd tell MUFC and its fans to shove it.

Legend is a word that gets overused. Bert Trautman is an excellent example of that.

United fans have still got their knickers in a twist because he put in a transfer request.

I think there is a huge case of the scouse delusion disease spreading to Man United. They lose Ronaldo, it doesn't matter because Rooney's the more important player anyway. Eden Hazard goes to Chelsea and it doesn't matter because they've got the superior Shinji Kagawa. They look like losing Rooney, it doesn't matter because he was at his peak when he was 20 anyway! They appoint David Moyes and somehow it's a great coup because Mourinho was desperate for the job and they didn't want him.

I don't know whether I want us to get him. I am slightly worried about the amount of complaints about him last season. His fitness and attitude have always been dicey. The money he's on is ridiculous. It's debatable whether we'd be able to sign him without paying over the odds.

But to say he's been on a downward slide since he was 20 is so ridiculous that it's laughable.

I actually think that the best solution for us is that Man United stick to their guns and refuse to sell him and he ends up being the most expensive rotting reserve in the world.

Suprised with that LGJM, I think Rooney is just what Chelsea need. He would go like a dream in front of your 3 attacking midfielders.

TBH that's just me looking at the downsides. I'm also highly skeptical that we'll get him.

Last season I didn't want us going after RVP because of his long history of injuries and the fact that I was suspicious whether he was just having a couple of great seasons of peaks which would quickly settle down again. I think RVP proved me on the far wrong side of wrong on that last season.

At the moment I think we're slight favourites for the title next season. If we were to get Rooney then I think that would boost our chances even more. Of course I'd be happy at that, but the transfer fee and his wages are a massive risk. And if we sign him and he is another Torres we're screwed.

I've said many times, that if it was a choice between Suarez or Torres up front for us next season I'd choose Suarez. If it's the choice between Rooney and Torres I'd choose Rooney. If it was a choice between Suarez or Rooney I think it'd be Rooney, but maybe Suarez, no Rooney. Or maybe Suarez.

But I do also wish that CFC would impose a complete ban on everyone with any scouse connection whatsoever. And that would mean we don't get either of them.

Job vacancy at Barca....wonder if they'll promote from within again?, or an ex-player now coaching?, or tempt Fergie out of retirement :) ?

Why is he a legend?

There are two things about him that were out of the ordinary. The fact he was a German POW who overcame massive initial opposition to him playing for an English club soon after the war. And the fact he broke his back during the game and played on.

Apart from that, he just played a hell of a lot of games for Man City without much distinction. Pretty much a goalkeeping Matt Le Tissier.

You are the one claiming that other people are wrongly labelled as legendary, but he's bona fide legend. Who are these wrongly labelled legends? Why is Trautmann such a bona fide legend?

The story is one of legendary fame in the same way the the Rorke's Drift test match is. Since when does one have to pass a criteria akin to an assessment to become a legend? Legends can become so off the back of one incredible story and there's few more incredible than an enemy who played alongside his former enemies to the extent of breaking his neck for them. That's a pretty legendary exploit with little comparison.

Certainly in English football, he's probably the earliest goalkeepers that people can name. That's fame established by legendary actions.

Actions? Go on then, name another one.

No one who hears about Trautman breaking his neck in a cup final and playing on for the next 15 minutes cannot fail to be impressed with that. (Personally I'm staggered that it took the FA another 10 years to introduce substitutions to the game). It was a legendary piece of sport.

But one legendary moment in an otherwise "meh" career doesn't create a "bona fide legend".

If Mintball had said "RIP to the legend Bert Trautman" I wouldn't have said a thing. But she didn't.
