To instigate some debate whose "side" are you on in the lockout?

Personally i'm 100% with the owners. As I understand they have agreed to all the rookie cap/extra cash for retired players etc but the key issue is the TV money. The owners want an extra $1 million(or it could be billion I can't remember) off the top before distributing the rest to the players in salary etc. The players as I understand don't want the owners getting the extra money. Err...Why? The owners are the ones who risk everything to run a business and they should get the profit.

The extra money wouldn't miraculously lead to a higher overall wage for players, it would just mean that the star players each get a couple of million more.

The longer the case lasts the more likely IMO the owners will win. They are united for the most part and have the money and patience to sit it out. The players will descend into disarray when the low earning players get tired of waiting and need the money, especially when it just seems like its going to benefit the top earners.

Facts are very limited at the minute but that seems to be the main argument, plus obviously I don't have very much knowledge of US Anti-trust law.

Seems very fair SC. It's billion I think. Ian77redux may have a clue about the anti-trust law. I see it getting sorted mid july. Loads of teams hastily signing free agents and overpaying for players in trades etc.

I know plenty about English/EU competition law issues but obviously the US law is very different so I don't know how much of a case the players have. Presumbably they have a relatively strong case to take it to trial.

I think some of the case is due to be heard in early June. Whether that totally sorts it out is anybodies guess. If the courts can't sort it out quickly, I expect it to run until August. I reckon we'll miss one pre-season game at which point the players will fold and accept the owners offer.

I think it's 7th of June that it goes back to court.

On t'internet in Lancs.

I've tried to stay away from all the details of the lockout,as with all lockouts it's about the players wanting more money and the owners not wanting to give them more.

In related lockout news did anybody see Ray Lewis say that crime would rise if there was a lockout.I can't see people in america saying 'oh no the Bears/Packers/Cowboys etc are not playing this year,i've got nothing to watch now so i'm going to rob a bank instead' :D

Maybe he meant crime committed by the players

If they're not in their routine and training with their teams, theye inevitably more likely to go out and do something stupid. We all know that a lot of the players have some less than desirable acquaintances that they hang around with while they're not playing football!

With the owners on this one, D. Smith is just looking to further his own career by bringing "down" the NFL, he's pretty much said so himself. He's holding things back from the players, like telling them the percentage of revenue is going down...but failed to tell them despite this, the money the players receive would go UP.

On top of this he's making utterly ridiculous demands like wanting to see all the teams accounts, in what line of work do the employees get to DEMAND to see company accounts? They have no right to do so.

Ah well, I'm sure Brady feels big about himself suing the league when he's due to earn something stupid like 16m this year

In Ray's case, if there's no season then his opportunities for committing crime go down. No Superbowl, no parties to go to in Atlanta. No relevant facts to hide from the police...
